Judiciary Committee Failure to Conduct Oversight is Catastrophe in the Making

VIDEO: Click here to watch Rep. Nadler’s opening statement at the House Judiciary Committee hearing with Peter Strzok.

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee held its second hearing in less than a month on the FBI and Department of Justice’s actions surrounding the 2016 election and the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. During the hearing, the Majority questioned FBI Agent Peter Strzok in what I believe was a clear effort to undermine the integrity and credibility of an ongoing criminal investigation being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. In my view, they failed in this effort.

Of greater concern to me, however, is that the Majority seems to feel that we do not have time to conduct oversight on election security, voting rights, the family separation crisis, the status of Dreamers, the President’s potential violations of the Emoluments Clause, or any other emergency situations facing our nation. The American people deserve a Congress that will act in their best interest. It is my hope that the Judiciary Committee will take these issues seriously, rather than attempting to disrupt the work of the Special Counsel, and not shirk from our responsibility to protect our democratic institutions and the rule of law.

Modernizing NYC's Freight Distribution System

At a press conference, Rep. Nadler spoke in support of Freight NYC, which will make moving freight more efficient.

The New York region needs a better way to move goods, plain and simple. On this, there is overwhelming consensus that we must end our over-reliance on trucks, which destroy our roads, harm our environment, and create safety and national security vulnerabilities. I was proud to stand with Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development Alicia Glen last week to announce Freight NYC, a new plan to modernize our maritime and rail assets and create new distribution facilities, with the ultimate goal of creating nearly 5,000 new jobs and a more sustainable and resilient supply chain network.

Warning Against Ramifications of President's SCOTUS Nominee

Following the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy, President Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the United States Supreme Court. In my opinion, the addition of Judge Kavanaugh would fundamentally shift the balance of our highest court drastically to the right, which is why I am urging my Senate colleagues to oppose his nomination.

Given his conservative record, a Justice Kavanaugh would likely vote to undermine access to healthcare under the Affordable Care Act, roll back civil rights protections for LGBT Americans, and undercut women’s reproductive rights by overturning Roe v. Wade. I believe that whoever replaces Justice Kennedy must be an honest and fair-minded arbiter who will uphold and defend the rights of all Americans. Based on his previous rulings, Judge Kavanaugh falls well short of this test.
