children to an Arkansas preacher who was married for seventy years to the
same woman. Singing gospel from the age f four, Cynthia Scott’s household
did not play contemporary music. “The first song I heard outside gospel was
‘Save Your Love for Me,’ “ she remembers. How remarkable, then, that she
later was discovered by none other than Ray Charles. After high school she
sand on the local club scene in Dallas, until the day Ray called, offering
her two years of a touring gig abroad as one of his “Raeletter” backup
singers. Since then she has performed with many more of the Jazz world’s
superstars including Lionel Hampton, Ed Cherry and Winton Marsalis. She
recently finished recording a jazz/soul album-as-memoir, “Dream for One

May 1st, the Morris-Jumel Mansion opened the most ambitious art exhibition
in its 250-year history. *Colonial Arrangements* will feature new and
established work by world-renowned British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare.
Celebrated for his extensive use of Dutch wax textiles, Shonibare makes art
that’s at once colorful, invigorating, fantastical and thought-provoking.
In *Colonial Arrangements*, Morris-Jumel will place in several of its
period rooms classic Shonibare sculptures taken from the series “Mother and
Father Worked Hard So I Can Play” and “Planets In My Head,” as well as a
new work, commissioned by the Mansion, which uses 19th-century-inspired
theatrical techniques to create a ghostly apparition of Eliza Jumel, MJM’s

*Sing for Hope Pianos 2015 *The Sing for Hope Pianos is a beloved public
art installation that brings brightly colored pianos to the parks and
public spaces of NYC’s five boroughs for anyone and everyone to play. For
two weeks in the summer, the pianos — each a unique art piece created by a
different artist or designer — serve as gathering places in their
communities, hosting impromptu concerts by professionals and amateurs alike
in an open festival of music for all of New York City. After the two-week
public exhibition, we donate the instruments to the NYC organizations we
serve year round, allowing the pianos to enrich lives for years to come.
While their time on the streets is a joyful event for our city, the Sing
for Hope Pianos’ true impact lies in their service as ongoing cornerstones
of arts access for communities and individuals in need. As NYC’s largest
public art project, the Sing for Hope Pianos impacts an estimated 2 million
New Yorkers and visitors each year. This year's Sing for Hope Pianos
exhibit will feature 50 painted Pianos, including four in northern

volunteer interviewers have been trained to collect these stories.

by ensuring homeowners, property managers and development companies hire
qualified and experienced professionals. Knowing a professional’s
disciplinary and voluntary license surrender record can help determine if
they can safely perform construction work. The Department of Buildings
(DoB) investigates and takes disciplinary action against construction
professionals when their conduct violates standards set forth in the NYC
Construction Codes. DoB has created a searchable comprehensive directory of
all construction professionals that it monitors. The catalogue provides
records back to 1998, and includes details of discipline action that were
enforced. The Directory, which is available online (
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/html/safety/iad.shtml), provides disciplinary
and voluntary surrender records for: licensed Architects and Engineers,
Construction Superintendents, Contractors, Electricians, Plumbers, Sign
Hangers, and many other professionals commonly hired by businesses,

work without proper licensing. Anyone hiring a construction professional is
encouraged to check both their disciplinary and voluntary surrender
records, as well as current license status. Property owners are responsible
for any work performed on their buildings and should ensure they hire

*Bicycle & Pedestrian Connections to the High Bridge *Thanks to the
community for its participation and engagement in the Department of
Transportation’s project to improve bicycle and pedestrian connections to
the High Bridge. NYC DOT will conduct work along Edgecombe Avenue, W. 170th
St. and W. 158th & 159th Streets to: install bike paths and bike markings
on Edgecombe Avenue fromW. 155th – W. 170th Streets, on W. 170th St. from
Haven to Edgecombe Aves., on W. 159th St. from Broadway to Edgecombe Ave.,
and on W. 158th St. from the Henry Hudson Parkway to Broadway; install
protected bike paths on Edgecombe Avenue from W. 165th to W. 170th Streets,
on W. 170th St. from Edgecombe to Ft. Washington Aves., and on W. 158th St.
from the Henry Hudson Parkway to Broadway; improve pedestrian crossings and
add pedestrian space at key intersections; and calm traffic and improve
safety on Edgecombe Ave., and W. 170th, 158th & 159th Streets. This project
will help to establish safe connections between parks, improve pedestrian
and bicycle safety and access to the High Bridge, and calm traffic.
Implementation of this important project will begin next week.

Washington Ave. @ W. 168th Street opened last week, *Tuesday, June 2nd*.
The W. 175th St. Greenmarket will open *Thursday, June 25th, *slightly east
of its usual location, btw. Wadsworth & St. Nicholas Aves.; both markets
will remain open through mid-November.



*Water Main Shutdown on Wadsworth Terrace **The NYC Department of Design &
Construction is managing a water main replacement project on Wadsworth
Terrace from W. 1980th St. to Fairview Ave., and on Fairview Ave. from Fort
George Hill to Broadway. To facilitate the replacement of a 12” and a 20”
water main, a water shutdown is necessary, weather and field conditions
permitting. All residents are asked to shut off all water-cooled
appliances. Curbside parking will be prohibited during thie shutdown; one
lane of traffic will be maintained. Certain operations will be noisy; DDC
will monitor operations to work within DEP Noise Code regulations.
Emergency vehicle access and pedestrian access to sidewalks and entryways
will be maintained at all times. **In addition to this advisory, a**
24-hour Advisory **will be sent confirming or cancelling this scheduled
water shut-off.** PLEASE NOTE: **All buildings affected by this shutdown
also will be notified directly. **"NO PARKING" Restrictions will be in
