*Fort Tryon Park's Elms Still Need Your Help! **Please consider a generous
gift to preserve these beautiful trees. *Across the country, over 77
million American elms have died from Dutch disease, including many of the
original elms of Fort Tryon Park. Dutch elm disease is a deadly fungus
which infects the sapwood of elm trees and is carried from tree to tree by
elm bark beetles. To address this issue, the Fort Tryon Park Trust has
hired a tree-care firm to inoculate the elms biannually. It is a costly
procedure, $60,000, but it provides the trees protection from the deadly
virus. Help us save our majestic elms by making a donation to the Fort
Tryon Park Trust's “Save the Elms” campaign.

****LG/USA PALISADES UPDATE*** (4 items)*

The Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct are hosting a free public slideshow
and lecture about the history of the Palisades on *Thursday, October 9th* *at
7:30 pm* at the Dobbs Ferry Library in the Community Room. The lecture
explores the century of stewardship behind the preservation of the
Palisades, a National Historic Landmark and National Natural Landmark.
Through images and narrative, Eric Nelsen, longtime historical interpreter
for Palisades Interstate Park, will bring the story of the Palisades to
life: its fishermen's villages and palatial estates, the epic struggle to
preserve the ancient cliffs, and the thriving beaches and campgrounds of
the Depression and New Deal era. The event was planned by the Friends of
the Old Croton Aqueduct. Co-sponsors include the Dobbs Ferry Historical
Society, the Hastings Historical Society, Groundwork Hudson Valley, the
Westchester County Historical Society, and Yonkers Public Library
Riverfront Branch. For more information about this and other public
programs, please go to the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct website at

Summer is over, and now we need to raise public awareness of the LG vs
Palisades issue. I cannot overestimate the importance of the pressure that
is being exerted on LG to do the right thing! We are having an impact! Ft.
Tryon Park Trust is generously allowing us to use their table and we will
provide flyers. Below are dates and hours that we need volunteers. Erica
Ilton is coordinating this effort; please RSVP to her directly:

· Sunday September 28th, 11:30am - 6:30pm for the Medieval
Festival. The Fort Tryon Park Trust's table is the second one on Margaret
Corbin Drive as you enter the park off of Margaret Corbin Circle. Over
65,000 people from throughout the region attend this, so it’s a great
opportunity to get people to sign a petition, get information, have their
questions answered.

· Saturday October 18th, 11:30am - 3:30pm for the Harvest Festival
in Fort Tryon Park. About 1000 adults come out for this with their kids.
The Fort Tryon Park Trust has a table at the park entrance to direct
Cloisters Visitors to the Cloisters and Harvest Festival folks to the Cafe
Lawn

· Sunday November 16th, noon - 3pm for the Battle of Fort
Washington commemorative event on Fort Tryon Park's Cafe Lawn. Attended by
500+ adults.

And please: help spread the word about LG's development and its threat to
the historical and landmarked Palisades. Keep this in mind when you make
consumer choices regarding cell phones, TVs and other household
appliances. *SIGN
the petition on our website: *www.protectthepalisades.org. There are
already more than 6,000 signatures; let yours be one of them! And if you
haven’t already done so, write a letter to CEO Bon-Joon Koo
