Dear Broadway Democrats,

Manhattan residents will be choosing a new Borough President this year, and
I am writing to ask for the Broadway Democrats’ endorsement.

I have served the people of New York for over 40 years: as a City Council
member representing the Upper West Side for the past 12 years, as the
Deputy Public Advocate for Intergovernmental Affairs, as the Director of
Mayor Dinkins’ Federal Office, as Chief of Staff to City Council member and
former Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger, and beyond. *I know how
this city operates.*

I’ve spent the last two years speaking with community leaders, negotiating
business interests, and navigating the back halls of New York politics to
push my groundbreaking bill instituting Paid Sick Leave. *The bill will
pass today*. Soon, New York employees won’t live in fear that an illness or
the flu will cost them their jobs and their livelihood.

I introduced and passed innovative open-data legislation that deploys
technology to make government more transparent and accessible to the
public. The open data bill is the most comprehensive bill of its kind in
the country. Manhattan is more than a borough; it’s a collection of
neighborhoods with wildly different needs. Civic organizations can use the
data to determine what’s best for their neighborhoods at the micro level
and plan accordingly.

For 12 years, I’ve worked to improve quality of life in Manhattan:
eliminating graffiti, banning smoking in parks and on beaches, and
requiring landlords to make necessary housing repairs. I created the Bed
Bug Advisory Board, which aggressively tackled the issue and lowered
infection rates. On the Upper West Side, I’ve protected Mom and Pop shops
and limited the number of commercial banks per block. I secured $50,000 in
funding to install specialized trashcans – an innovative solution to combat
a growing rat epidemic.

I’ve spent the last 40 years working in New York government, interacting
with the community, and navigating the broom closets of City Hall to
provide my constituents with the services they deserve. *I am the most
available and accessible politician in New York.* Many of you already have
my cell phone number. My home phone is publicly listed to the dismay of my
husband.

The Manhattan Borough President demands accessibility, dedication, and the
ability to bring varied – often divergent – interests together from across
the city to develop innovative solutions to our toughest challenges. I’ve
been doing it for 40 years, and *I need your support so I can continue
working on your behalf.*

If you would like additional information about my campaign, please visit my
website at http://www.galebrewer.com/. Thank you for your consideration.
Best wishes,

Gale
