Dear Friends,

As you may have heard, rent regulations protecting over 2.5 million New Yorkers 
have expired. This happened because Albany Republicans refused to support - or even
vote on - my bill to extend and strengthen rent laws.

Late last night, with less than two hours to go before rent regulations expired,
 Senate Republicans tried to push through a temporary extension that did not close
any of the loopholes that cause rents to be raised and tenants to be harassed. Having
ignored this critical issue for six months, Republicans tried to kick the can down
the road, instead of addressing the real challenge of protecting tenants and preserving
affordable housing in New York.

By voting against this Republican measure, I sent a clear message: We will not accept
a "straight extender" that waters down tenant protections and harms New York City
families. While rent regulations have officially expired, tenants do not face immediate danger.
Leases are still valid and fully applicable and New York has well established procedures
for dealing with these brief periods of deregulation. However, in order to continue
protecting tenants through rent laws, the state must pass a new set of rent regulations
that will affect over one million apartment units in New York City.

We will continue to fight for strong rent regulations that stabilize communities
 across New York and keep middle class and working-families in their homes.

We will not let up. And we will not come home until we pass a rent regulations bill
that protects, not harms, New York City tenants.
