Featured product: Stainless steel sluice gates
------------------------------------------------------

For decades, cast iron was the only material allowed by AWWA standards
for big sluice gates -- but refinements in design and improvements in
material availability have made other materials superior to cast iron.

Cast iron gates obtained their strength from their sheer bulk. They
weighed a lot, and that allowed them to hold water back. Stainless
steel sluice gates, by contrast, gain their strength by virtue of their
structural design. This means stainless steel gates can be built much
lighter than comparable cast iron gates -- just like lighter but
better-engineered modern cars are often safer than older vehicles which
were only safer when they weighed more than the cars with which they
collided. The lighter weight of modern stainless steel gates results in
better-performing gates that are easier and more economical to install.

Moreover, stainless steel gates make no metal-to-metal contact at the
seating perimeter; instead, the stainless steel plate is channeled by
UHMW (ultra-high molecular weight) polyethylene guides, which reduces
the amount of friction encountered when the gates are raised and lowered
and improves the quality of the seal. As a result, stainless steel gates
can be guaranteed to out-perform the leakage rates allowed by AWWA
standards for cast iron gates -- in some cases, by a factor of ten or
more. Plus, stainless steel gates don't seize like cast iron gates do.
