Into the State of Mind, “I feel responsible for X.”

When it comes to states, some are very simple and direct: fear, anger, joy, relaxation, etc.  Others states are complex—and some are very complex.  They are layered multiple times so that it requires lots of nested beliefs within beliefs.  These are not simple meta-states, they are layered meta-states.  To model these richly complex states, you have to know how to elicit meta-levels and get to the interpretative frames in the back of a person’s mind.  Feeling responsible is one such state.

Einstein said that he “felt responsible” for the development of the automic bomb.
Some people “feel responsible” when they make a mistake, many others do not, they blame and become defensive.
 
What do you “feel responsible” for?  Are you actually responsible for it or is it just a feeling, actually a false feeling?

If you want to push someone’s buttons, skeptically ask them, ‘Are you a responsible person?”  Or ask someone, “Would you like to be a responsible person?” the implication is that they are not and you want them to be!  It seems that within human nature there is an awareness that being responsible is a highly desirable thing. 
 
And when it comes to being a responsible person that’s what all of us want for our children.  It’s what leaders and managers want for their employees and their teams.  It’s what Mayors and Governors and Presidents want for their citizens.  And simultaneously it is one of the missing ingredients in many children, many citizens, many teams, and many organisations.
