NEURO-SEMANTIC NLP

Recently several people have made comments that made me realize I need to
present yet another post here about the relationship between Neuro-Semantics
and NLP. For example, one person at the Conference said:

"I'm surprised that you still do so much NLP in your work. I didn't think
there would be that much NLP in it any longer."

Another asked more directly:

"So do you still do 'NLP,' as such, in Neuro-Semantics?"

Now the answer to these questions and many more like them is very simple and
direct. "Yes, of course we do NLP." Not only is NLP the foundational model
out of which Neuro-Semantics grew, but NLP is still the foundational model
that Neuro-Semantic trainers train and certify. When Neuro-Semantics began,
the vision was to "take NLP to a higher level professionally and ethically."
That was the vision that Bob and I put on the original website in 1996.

And given the lawsuit that Bandler filed against the field of NLP in 1996,
and all of the squabbles that were going on in the field at that time, as
well as the number of people mis-using the models of NLP, our vision was to
get beyond the scarcity mentality, the "I invented this all by myself"
mentality, the competitive mentality and to take NLP to a higher level.
That's still our vision. That is still the Vision statement that every
Licensed Neuro-Semantic NLP Trainer and every Meta-Coach signs.

That's why we generally phrase things using the title of this post,
Neuro-Semantic NLP. It is NLP and over the years we have qualified it more
and more with the newer distinctions of Neuro-Semantics. So when a
Neuro-Semantic NLP Trainer trains and certifies "the Practitioner course" of
NLP, the certificate calls that "Meta-NLP." And for the "Master
Practitioner course" of NLP, the certificates reads, "the Master Meta-NLP."
It is NLP and if you want to know the content of it, get the books User's
Manual of the Brain, Volumes I and II. Years ago Bob and I put the basic
content in the books (published by Crown House Publications).

Why in the world did we do that? Doesn't that take away from the training?
Won't people just read the text books of the content of NLP and not take the
training? That's possible. But we know this- you cannot really learn NLP
from a book. It's too experiential. It is too inter-personal and so it
requires a much more hands-on approach to truly and deeply learn it. In
fact, we make reading the materials like User's Manual, Sourcebook of Magic,
and Secrets of Personal Mastery reading requirements prior to the training.
In that way, people learn most of the content before they come so that they
can focus on having the experience of applying the models and patterns to
their own lives and with each other in the actual experiential trainings.

Neuro-Semantic NLP is high quality NLP in terms of knowing the basic models.
That's part of our Vision and Mission. Why? Because there is a lot of very
poor quality NLP taught around the world. So we spend time teaching the
Meta-Model of Language right from the beginning, as well as the NLP
Communication Model of representational systems, strategies, and
sub-modalities, along with the basic NLP patterns. All this is
foundational. In far too many places, people get NLP Practitioner
Certificates and have not studied the Meta-Model distinctions, don't know
the precision questions, and don't know how to track the Strategy of an
experience. Yet NLP is "the study of the structure of subjective
experience."

Neuro-Semantic NLP is high quality NLP in terms of applications. To achieve
this, we put a lot of emphasis on "apply to self." Our stated policy is-
You are not ready to use this material or these patterns on others until you
have used them with yourself and applied then to your own issues. This is
what earns you the right to use it with others. This is what creates your
credibility with others. We do this also because there is still a lot of
people doing NLP on people and not applying to self. That makes then
inauthentic, incongruent, and generally ineffective.

Neuro-Semantic NLP is high quality NLP in terms of relationships. As a
Communication Model, one of the first things modeled in NLP was "the
structure of rapport." And what was discovered from Virginia and Fritz and
later Erickson, was that Carl Roger's focus on "accurate empathy" could be
obtained by spending time listening, noticing, observing, and calibrating to
the other person and then matching them. So relationship is central to high
quality NLP. This, in fact, distinguishes those who use NLP with respect
and dignity and those who mis-use it for their own manipulations.

Neuro-Semantic NLP is high quality NLP in terms of collaboration. If we
learn NLP in a solid and thorough way, if we apply NLP to ourselves, if we
build respectful relationship, then we will naturally and inevitably operate
from a state of abundance (there's plenty for all) and collaboration. We
will live above "the jungle" of the lower needs (Maslow), we will
acknowledge sources, we will give credit to those we learn from, and we will
seek to set up collaborative partnerships. This still lies at the heart of
our Vision and Mission in Neuro-Semantics.

Accordingly, we are always seeking to set up collaborative partnerships with
people who are running more traditional NLP trainings. Just because we have
our branding (Neuro-Semantics) and vision of "taking NLP to a higher level
ethically and professionally" we do not discount others in this field. We
are inclusive, not exclusive. That's why I personally support all of the
NLP Associations and Conferences and get to them as often as I can and
support many of the various projects going on in the field, especially the
research projects.

So again, Neuro-Semantic NLP is simply high quality NLP. Yes, we have added
the Neuro-Semantic branding to it, but at its heart it is still NLP.
