UNLEASHING
CREATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING
Problems come in many kinds. Some problems have been around for a long time
so that over the years someone or some group of people have solved it. And
over more years others have streamlined and made the solution even more
effective. As a result, all we need to do today is to find those solutions
and apply them. With these we do not need to re-invent the solution. The
problem is solved. Trying to re-solve it only wastes times, energy, and
focus. For these kinds of problems, we only need to focus our energies on
finding and applying them. Have you ever wasted time solving a problem only
to discover later that the solution was already available? Only you didn't
know it or know where to find it!
In research and modeling we begin by looking into a field, exploring the
literature to see if the solution to the problem has already been discovered
or created. It is wisdom to begin by asking, "Has anyone ever addressed
this problem? If so, who? And when? What solution has already been
created to solve this problem?"
A potential problem with this approach is assuming that finding,
identifying, and knowing a solution solves the problem! It does not. That
requires questioning another-the application step of actually applying the
solution in the context of the problem. After all, a perfectly good
solution is worthless if you don't apply it, implement it, and execute it!
But then there are a whole other set of problems-problems for which we do
not have a solution, at least not yet. And there are also the set of
problems that have just enough idiosyncratic features so as to require that
we use our creativity to adjust it to our situation. For those problems we
need a new level of creativity-we need creative problem-solving skills.
Today all of this is especially relevant due to the ever-increasing
dimensions of complexity, change, and speed which are constantly delivering
up ever-new problems. For these problems a search of the literature about
former solutions may provoke some creative thinking, but not specific
answers. For these problems we need to learn how to be creative in our
approach and attitude. We need to become creative within ourselves. We
need our creativity unleashed. And we need to unleash the innate creativity
of the people who work with us or for us. For these problems we especially
need to be able to tap into and release intellectual, creative, and
emotional capital of ourselves and others.
In a word, this is what the Creativity and Innovation Workshop is all about.
As the second in a series of workshops on the Psychology of
Self-Actualization, this workshop focuses on enabling leaders, managers,
parents, coaches, trainers, therapists, entrepreneurs, etc. to become more
creativity within themselves and their organizations or communities. The
premise is that when a person actualizes his or her highest and best and
create one's own best version of self, we release our creative potentials.
And this is what entrepreneurs and leaders at all levels need.
Another key premise of the workshop is that through Self-Actualization
Psychology we now have specific processes for unleashing our creative
problem-solving skills. And because the field of Coaching is based on the
kind of psychology that assumes people have resources, can become creative,
and can unleash higher levels of possibilities-this workshop is especially
appropriate for coaches and other who facilitate the best in others.
In Creativity and Innovation Workshop we focus on four factors of business,
wealth creation, and success: problems, outcomes, solutions, and innovation.
This leads to four conversations that merge into a single one, a dance of
solution.
. Designing a well-formed outcome: What do you want? What
is your intention, agenda, and motivation?
. Designing a well-formed problem: What's in the way? How
to think clearly and with precision about problems? What is the real
problem? Are you solving the right problem? The real problem?
. Designing a well-formed solution: How can you think
about solutions more creatively?
. Designing a well-formed innovation: How can you think
throughly and effective about the innovation processes to implement solid
solutions?
If you're interested and I hope you are- then the next workshop on
Creativity and Innovation is in November (14-16) in north central Italy. And
this is your invitation!
