The Save Allen Psych coalition has a Town Hall at Holyrood Church at 7pm
tonight to strategize about how to keep this important community resource

The West 102nd-103rd Streets Block Association's Annual Party is also

Save the date June 6 at 6pm for an *Immigrant Know Your Rights training* at
PS 128 (560 W. 169 St.). We’ll be joined by senior leadership from the
Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and the Department of Education. This
event is about empowering our community through knowledge of the rights of
immigrants of all statuses.

*OUR WORK IN THE COMMUNITY*
The first weekend in May, I had the honor of getting my hands dirty with a
number of community groups. We started out cleaning up trash with the
Fairview Avenue Lot Renewal Project.





Then we moved on to the Spring projects with the 500–527 W. 134th Street
block association.



We wrapped up planting at the Dyckman Houses community garden with an
amazing group called the *Outer Seed Shadow Project* that I’m proud to be
able to fund.




On Tuesday, May 7, I welcomed the inimitable *Carmen Rojas* to Albany as
Senate District 31’s *Woman of Distinction*. Sra. Rojas’ work in education
over the past 40 years continues to inspire me.



My office has been very involved in discussions around the *Single Men’s
Homeless Shelter* that NYC Department of Homeless Services has announced
for 286 Audubon Avenue. Last Friday, we participated in a discussion with
DHS about the shelter. I feel that everybody deserves a home and I
understand that DHS has a mandate to shelter. However, we must reform the
site selection and notification process to provide meaningful community
input. This siting is too close to other stigmatized service providers and
is not a good fit for the Northern Manhattan community. I am urging DHS to
consider siting a single women’s shelter instead. If that is not possible,
I will oppose this shelter site at that location.


*Tenant power is on fire in Albany!* Hundreds of you joined over 1,500
tenants from across New York State on Tuesday, May 14 to deliver 30-day
notice to us legislators. We received the message loud and clear. I am
proudly signed on to all 9 bills of the Housing Justice for All platform
and am actively working to get my colleagues to support this legislation.
With your continued support, I feel confident we can make major gains in
tenants’ rights before the Rent Laws expire on June 15.



*LEGISLATIVE UPDATE*
Here are some of the important bills I’m working to pass before the end of
the legislative session June 19:

S2837/A2750 - Farmworkers’ Bill of Rights - Allows farm workers to
collectively bargain, guarantees them a minimum of one day’s rest weekly,
mandates overtime pay, and makes them eligible for workers’ compensation.

*S3820/A3820 - Mechanical Voids - Closes void loophole by requiring that
all void space exceeding either 5% of the total building height or 20 feet
be counted toward total floor-area-ratio.

*S5166 - Commercial Vacancy Tax - Implements a tax on storefronts in New
York City that have been vacant for more than 6 months, with the goal of
incentivizing landlords to renew leases of small businesses that are
essential to the fabric of our communities.

*S3334/A3289 - Charter School Transparency - Increases reporting
requirements to the Education Commissioner; requires charter schools to
follow the same disciplinary rules and procedures as public schools follow;
clarifies that if charter schools do not meet their statutory and
contractual goals, then their charters should not be renewed.

*S5394 - Opt Out of High-Stakes Testing - Mandates that school districts
inform parents of their rights to opt out of all high-stakes
testing—including State ELA and Math exams—and prohibits punitive measures
for test refusal against districts in the form of withheld state aid,
schools, teachers in the form of performance reviews, and students.

I am also committed to passing the Climate and Community Protection Act to
make NY fossil fuel-free by 2050 at the latest, provide accountability and
enforceable goals, ensure fair labor standards for green jobs, and build
into the foundation of a just transition the racial and economic justice
our vulnerable communities are owed.

Reserven la fecha del 6 de junio a las 6pm para un *entrenamiento de
“Conocer Sus Derechos”* para inmigrantes en PS 128 (560 W. 169 St.).
Juntamos con el liderazgo de la Oficina del Alcalde de Asuntos Inmigrantes
y el Departamento de Educación. Este evento tiene que ver con empoderando a
nuestra comunidad a través de conocimiento de los derechos que tienen
inmigrantes de cualquier estado.

*NUESTRO TRABAJO EN LA COMUNIDAD*
El primer fin de semana en mayo, tuve el honor de ensuciarme las manos con
varios grupos comunitarios. Empezamos con limpiando la basura con el
Proyecto de Renovar el Lote de Fairview Avenue.

Luego movimos a los proyectos de primavera con la Asociación de la Cuadra
500–527 W. 134th St.

Y concluimos sembrando en el jardin comunitario de Dyckman Houses con un
grupo extraordinario que se llaman *Outer Seed Shadow Project* el cual me
siento muy orgulloso de poder apoyar.

El 7 de mayo, extendí las bienvenidas a Albany a la inimitable *Carmen
Rojas* como la *Mujer de Distinción* del Distrito 31. El trabajo de Sra.
Rojas en el área de educación a través de los últimos 40 años sigue
inspirándome a mi.

Mi oficina se involucra mucho en el discurso sobre *el refugio para hombres
solteros* que el Departamento de Servicios Para Gente Sin Hogar (DHS por
sus siglas en inglés) anunció para 286 Audubon Ave. El viernes pasado,
participamos en una discusión con DHS sobre el refugio. Me siento que todo
el mundo merezca un hogar y entiendo que DHS tiene un mandato de ofrecer
refugio. Pero tenemos que reformar el proceso de seleccionar sitios y
notificar a las comunidades para dar la oportunidad para aporte
comunitario. Este sitio se queda demasiado cerca a los proveedores de
servicios estigmatizados y no cae bien con la comunidad de Alto Manhattan.
Yo insto a DHS que consideren poniendo un refugio para hembras solteras. Si
eso no es posible, opongo la construcción de un refugio en ese lugar.

*El poder de inquilinxs está creciendo en Albany*! Cientos de ustedes se
unieron con más de 1,500 inquilinxs por todo el Estado de Nueva York el
martes 14 de mayo para dar noticias de 30 días a nosotrxs legisladores.
Recibimos el mensaje claramente. Me siento orgullo de haber firmado en los
9 proyectos de ley que consisten en el programa de Justicia de Vivienda
para Todxs y estoy trabajando activamente para cultivar el apoyo de mis
colegas para esta legislación. Con su activismo continuo, me siento
confidente que hagamos mejoras grandes en los derechos de inquilinxs antes
de que expiren las Leyes de Renta el 15 de junio. (1-2 fotos).

*NOTICIAS LEGISLATIVAS*
Aquí se ven unos proyectos de ley que me dedico a aprobar antes de que
termine la sesión legislativa el 19 de junio:

Una declaración de *los derechos de trabajadores agrícolas* (S2837), la
cual les extiende a lxs trabajadores agrícolas los derechos de formar un
sindicato, les garantiza un día de descanso mínimo semanalmente, requiere
pago extra para horas extras, y les hace eligible para la indemnización
laboral.

Legislación para *cerrar el resquicio legal de vacíos mecánicos* (S3820*)
por requerir que todo el espacio vacío más alla de 5% de la altura competa
del edificio o 20 pies se cuenta para la proporción piso-area.

Un *Impuesto de Vacancias Comerciales* (S5166*) que aplica a fachadas de
tienda en NYC que han estado vacantes por más de 6 meses, con el meta de
incentivar los caseros a renovar los contratos para pequeños negocios que
son esenciales para la tela de nuestra comunidad.

Una ley para *transparencia de las escuelas chárter* (S3334) que aumenta
los requisitos de reportar a la Comisaria de Educación; requiere a las
escuelas chárter que sigan las mismas reglas disciplinarias y los mismos
procesos que siguen las escuelas públicas; aclara que si las escuelas
chárter no alcanzan sus metas legales y contractuales, entonces no se deben
renovar sus chárteres.

Legislación para *obligar a los caseros que hagan reparaciónes ordenadas*
por la corte dentro de 60 días o corren el riesgo de perder control de la
propiedad (S3320).

Una ley (S5394*) que manda que los distritos escolares informen a los
padres y las madres de sus *derechos de rechazar exámenes de apuestas
elevadas*—incluso los Exámenes Estatales—y prohibe que se tomen medidas
punitivas por el rechazo de los exámenes en contra distritos en la forma de
ayuda retenida, escuelas, maestrxs en la forma de evaluaciones, y
estudiantes.

Yo tambien estoy comprometido a aprobar el *Acta de Protección de Clima y
Comunidad* (CCPA por sus siglas en inglés) que libera el Estado de Nueva
York de combustibles fósiles antes de 2050, garantiza responsabilidad y
metas que se puede hacer cumplir, asegurar de estándares laborales justos
para empleos “verdes,” e instalar al fondo de una transición justa la
justicia económica y racial que merecen nuestras comunidades vulnerables.
