Two weeks ago, I emailed you about our City’s dueling transportation
crises: the one above ground on our streets, and the one below in the
subway tunnels.

I have long held that the only plan to address both of these crises is a
congestion pricing plan that would raise desperately needed money for the
NYC Transit system while also cutting down the congestion choking our
streets.

The Governor, Mayor and State Legislature are currently working out the
details of such plan but we must ensure NYC residents give their input. We
want to hear from you!

Please join me, Council Member Helen Rosenthal, The Tri-State
Transportation Campaign, the New York League of Conservation Voters, and
the City Department of Transportation at a Congestion Pricing Town Hall to
share your thoughts, and have all your questions answered.

The Town Hall will take place on Tuesday, March 19th at 6pm at John Jay
College, 524 West 59th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues. To RSVP, call
our office at 212-928-6814. I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Mark Levine

Over the past decade our neighborhoods have been hemorrhaging mom and pop
stores at an increasingly alarming rate. These stores are the fabric and
soul of our communities. As landlords continue to rely on their well-worn
playbook of evicting tenants for the sake of dramatically increasing the
rent, since 2017, there have been over 3,900 commercial evictions in NYC,
and the rate continues to rise, leaving 20% of all retail space in
Manhattan vacant or soon-to-be vacant. We need to address this issue before
the storefront vacancy crisis gets any worse. Which is why I introduced
legislation yesterday that would protect independently owned small
businesses across the five boroughs by guaranteeing them an attorney in
eviction proceedings.

We’ve seen what happens when we give residential tenants an attorney in an
eviction proceeding--they win. It’s time to extend that right to local
small business owners.
