*Wednesday, June 24th, 2015*

*Dear Neighbor,*

*In the words of George Harrison, “all things must pass.” It has been my
honor and pleasure to represent Senator Espaillat as a Community Liaison
since his election in 2010. My last regular day in the office will be next
Thursday, July 2nd, though I will be transitioning during the month of July
and still available intermittently by email. Thank you for this opportunity
to serve you. I look forward to seeing you around northern Manhattan as
your neighbor. If you’d like to stay in touch (and stay on my personal
e-blast list), email me at elorrisritter at gmail.com
<elorrisritter at gmail.com>.*

*See below for upcoming events tonight, this week & weekend, next week, and
into the summer – lots of arts, music, classes, events in parks, free
lunches, and more -- as well as exciting update on LG/Palisades. *

*Lastly, if you live in a rent regulated apartment you have probably been
following proposals in the State Legislature to extend and strengthen our
rent laws. Our office has received calls from residents who are concerned
that they could face large rent increases or be evicted from their homes if
the rent regulations are not extended. If you are being harassed by your
landlord, call 311. The city is working closely with Legal Aid and other
organizations and is urging tenants to report any harassment immediately.
For more information on the rent laws, visit *
*http://www.nysenate.gov/senator/adriano-espaillat*
<http://www.nysenate.gov/senator/adriano-espaillat>*. Keep your lease handy
and KNOW YOUR RIGHTS! Please also see the “News You Can Use” section,
below. *

*Congratulations to all of the children, teens and young adults who are
moving on from elementary and middle school, and who have graduated from
high school or college. Enjoy your summer!*

****LG / PALISADES UPDATE****

This is the news we have been waiting for and fighting for! After years of
protests, lawsuits, meetings and speaking out, followed by many tense
months of waiting through negotiations with the LG Corporation and the town
of Englewood Cliffs, I am pleased to report that today they have reached a
settlement with environmental groups in New York and New Jersey that will
reduce the size of the proposed LG tower by more than half.

The proposed 143 foot tower would have protruded high above the tree line,
visible from the entire upper Manhattan water front. Under the agreement,
which is subject to court and local approval, the building will be
approximately 69 feet, and will not pierce the tree-line.

Senator Espaillat and other elected officials introduced a brief to the New
Jersey court last year in objection to the size of the tower. The brief
reads “one municipal board to defeat over a century of collaborative work
and investment by New York and New Jersey citizens, legislators, and
courts, as well as by the federal government, to preserve the historic
Hudson River Palisades north of the George Washington Bridge.”

The view of the Palisades from upper Manhattan is an awe inspiring sight
and has remained largely unspoiled since Henry Hudson's voyage more than
400 years ago. A determined coalition of local environmental groups and
elected officials were able to protect that view for what Sen. Espaillat
fervently hopes will be the next 400 years, and beyond.
