sexually assaulted on campus are coming forward. In fact, student survivors
have ignited a national movement to tackle both the epidemic of sexual
assault on campus and the lack of effective response from the colleges and
universities they hoped would support them. It’s time for meaningful
reform. At John Jay College, 524 W. 59th St., Room L76. Space is limited;

*Projections: The Hands That Feeds* At a popular bakery café, residents of
New York’s Upper East Side get bagels and coffee served with a smile 24
hours a day. But behind the scenes, undocumented immigrant workers face
sub-legal wages, dangerous machinery, and abusive managers who will fire
them for calling in sick. Mild-mannered sandwich maker Mahoma López has
never been interested in politics, but in January 2012, he convinces a
small group of his co-workers to fight back. Risking deportation and the
loss of their livelihood, the workers team up with a diverse crew of
innovative young organizers and take the unusual step of forming their own
independent union, launching themselves on a journey that will test the
limits of their resolve. In one roller-coaster year, they must overcome a
shocking betrayal and a two-month lockout. Lawyers will battle in back
rooms, Occupy Wall Street protesters will take over the restaurant, and a
picket line will divide the neighborhood. If they can win a contract, it
will set a historic precedent for low-wage workers across the country. But
whatever happens, Mahoma and his coworkers will never be exploited again. At
Word Up Community Bookshop/Librería Comunitaria, 2113 Amsterdam Ave., (at
W. 165 St.). Free and open to the public. *Thursday, April 30th, 6:30pm –

*“Walk the Heights in Manhattan” *Nancy Bruning will be participating as a
volunteer leader for this year’s “Jane’s Walks” created by the Municipal
Art Society. Her walk explores two large parks in Northern Manhattan. Fort
Tryon Park is a 67-acre historic park with breathtaking views of the Hudson
River, the largest heather garden on the east coast, and the Cloisters,
which houses a portion of the medieval art collection of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. Inwood Park is forested and boasts Indian caves and more.
The final touch is a visit to the newly developed Muscota Marsh Park at the
northernmost tip of Manhattan Island. What do you think about allowing
development on the Palisades? And who decides if a pubic amenity is a fair
trade for a private development? Meet at the entrance to Fort Tryon Park's
Heather Garden, across from the 190th street stop on the "A" train. For

*Women of Calabash Celebrate Mothers’ Day* Combining traditional
instruments with lush vocals, this renowned group of urban Americans
performs original and traditional music from Africa, the Caribbean, and the
Americas. Named for the calabash, one of the gourds that the group uses as
an instrument, this Afro-Cuban vocal/percussion trio is led and directed by
composer/arranger/vocalist/percussionist Madeleine Yayodele Nelson. She
makes many of the group's instruments, which are crafted from bamboo, wood,
and dried gourds. The group has been touring and performing together for
over 20 years, sharing the stage with many Phillip Glass, Ashford &
Simpson, the Temptations, and Max Roach, and have performed for the
presidents of West Africa and Haiti as well as sold-out audiences across

*Lawn Restoration & Temporary Closure at Bennett Park *As you may have
heard at recent Community Board 12 meetings, through a partnership of NYC
Parks and the Central Park Conservancy, the lawn at Bennett Park is being
restored. Work will begin on Wednesday April 15th and will require that the
lawn be closed for four months. Lawn restoration involves “soil
decompaction,” in which soil is tilled with compost to fluff it up, turning
a literally rock-hard surface where nothing can grow into a healthy, spongy
soil. This softer soil has pore space where air, water, and roots can pass
through. A lawn is a living system needing porous soil; soil without pores
is dead soil. The roots of grass actually hold these pores open and keep
the lawn alive. We must close the lawn now to give new grass time to grow
its roots and become tough and springy. Mature grass softens the footsteps
that slowly crush soil, holds soil in place, and keeps soil fluffy. A bare
spot on a lawn is a place literally no plant can grow until the soil is
de-compacted again.

The playground and southern plaza and seating areas in Bennett will remain
open during the restoration and re-establishment period. Please make use of
other lawns – J. Hood Wright, Highbridge, Ft. Tryon & Inwood Hill Parks
this Spring/Summer. Central Park Conservancy will be installing signs on
site as work begins and will be fencing in the lawn during reconstruction
and following it. *We need YOUR help to ensure their work is a success,*
and that means spreading the word about the need to keep off the lawn
during its re-establishment period of 4 months. Thank you in advance for
helping us bring a beautiful and more enjoyable lawn to Bennett Park.
Should you have any questions, please contact jennifer.hoppa at parks.nyc.gov or
