*Dear Neighbor,*

*As always, there’s so much going on all over the District. As the summer

*A word on fire safety **In the wake of Monday’s terrible fire in a
residential building on W. 136th Street, we are reminded how easily fire
can start and how quickly it can spread, with devastating results. A
15-year-old girl is dead, a dozen are injured and more than 60 people
rendered temporarily homeless. The fire was caused by overloaded power
strip which was located under some furniture; it spread quickly due to fire
doors being left open. Protect yourself, your neighbors and your home;
please:*

· *Don’t overload electrical outlets.*

· *Never run electrical or extension cords under rugs.*

· *Don’t leave stove/oven fires or candles unattended.*

· *Keep fire doors shut, and windows/fire escapes unblocked.*

· *Make sure your smoke detector works; change the battery when you
change your clocks.*

· *Have an escape plan, including a meeting place for all apartment
residents.*

· *Get renters’ or homeowners’ insurance: even a couple-hundred
$/yr can buy significant coverage.*

*Scroll down for information about things happening:*

*Second Annual Michael Perelstein Memorial Scholarship Fund: *a $20,000
Scholarship fund created to support New York City school children (grades

interests. Perelstein passed away at age 56; the scholarship fund
established in his honor by his wife, Elizabeth Perelstein, is built around
the concept of supporting the passions and talents of children. The
Discover Your Passion Competition will award the grand prize winner $5,000
toward his or her pursuit; three second place winners will receive $3,500,
and three third place winners will receive $1,500, for a total of $20,000.
Finalists will be selected from each of two age categories: 2nd - 5th

****HOW YOU CAN HELP*** (5 items)*

*District 6 Community Education Council seeks art supplies *In an effort to
make CEC meetings more accessible to District 6 parents, the Parent
Involvement & Outreach Committee will be establishing childcare at each
meeting. They are looking for donations of arts and crafts and other such
supplies (crayons, markers, paper, stickers, small toys/puzzles, etc.) to
help keep children occupied during meetings that are interesting and
important for adults, but not so much fun for kids. Also they are looking
for donations of food/snack, if you are a business owner, or a generous
person with a Costco card. For more information or if you are able to make
a donation, please call Marilu Pisani at 917-521-3793 or email
cec6 at schools.nyc.gov.

*Older Adults Training & Education Needs Survey *Hunter College’s Silberman

through collaboration in education, research and advocacy activities with
community members who work with our elders. To help us develop and support
education and training programs that will be most useful to you and your
teams, please click here (https://jfe.qualtrics.com/form/SV_b1abU6axLpPWVo1)
to complete a brief survey. We thank you in advance for your participation.

*Voluntary Survey on Community Involvement in Research* Community Partners
Integration Workgroup, a workgroup of community organizations and
universities with CTSAs focused on advancing equitable academic-community
research, is conducting a survey to better understand community involvement
in research by surveying representatives of community-based organization,
public health program, faith-based organization, or other nonprofit
organization. This survey is completely voluntary. If you would like to
participate you may access the survey by pasting the following link into
your web browser: https://redcap.vanderbilt.edu/surveys/?s=vP9rbbaTmn by August
31st.

*NYC Prevention Resource Center Training Needs Survey *Hello colleagues, if
you have not had a chance to fill out the NYC Prevention Resource Center
Training Needs Survey, please take a few minutes to complete it. We are in
the process of planning our Training/Workshop Calendar for 2014-2015 and we

*Help the residents of 512 W. 136th Street recently rendered homeless by
fire on Monday *The Church of the Annunciation at 88 Convent Avenue on the
corner of 131st Street will be accepting donations of clothing and other
household goods. There will be someone on-site at all hours of the day to
accept them. Call 212-234-1919 with any questions or issues.

****ROAD & TRANSIT INFO*** (4 items)*

*Rerouting of M2 & M3 (southbound) at W. 168th St. & Broadway *Because of
sidewalk and subway ceiling reconstruction (which is part of the Brick Arch
Reconstruction Project) the M2/M3 southbound bus stop will be temporarily
revoked. Due to redesign issues, the bus stop adjustment at 168th Street
and Broadway did not take place in February as previously planned. Those
design issues have now been resolved and the contractor is requesting that
NYC DOT eliminate the M2/M3 southbound bus stop on Broadway at W.
168th St. *beginning
August 3rd for a duration of 2-3 months.*

*M100 Reroutes to Serve Dyckman Street *The M100 bus will now serve
residents, shoppers and community members along the Dyckman corridor and
Tenth Avenue, bringing public transit to once under-served areas. Traveling
northbound, the bus will turn right from Broadway onto Dyckman St. making
stops all along the corridor. It will then pass the Dyckman Houses and turn
left onto Tenth Avenue, where PS 5 is located. The bus will then drive up
Tenth Avenue providing bus service where it did not previously exist. The
Bx7 will continue to operate north and south on Broadway in the areas that
the M100 once operated so there will be no loss of service on Broadway.
Thanks to Council Member Rodriguez's office (in particular Marble Hill &
Dyckman Houses Community Liaison, Tony Edwards) for their efforts to bring
about this change in service better to serve our community.

*M100 Bus Stop Change *As of Tuesday, July 29, MTA New York City Transit
has officially requested permission from NYC DOT to eliminate the
northbound M100 bus stop on 10th Avenue on the near side of W. 207th Street
due to customer and operating safety. The stop has been replaced with a new
bus stop on 10th Avenue at the far side of W. 207th Street (2nd column
after the intersection). Our Operations Planning unit observed that the
initial bus stop caused customers to be dropped off into a right turn lane
and cars were passing the bus on the right as customers were alighting. By
moving the stop from the near side to the far side, the bus avoids dropping
off customers into the right turn lane.

*Slow Down on Broadway! *Effective Monday, August 4th, the NYPD will
enforce a 25mph speed limit on Broadway from West 59th to West 220th
Streets as part of an “Arterial Slow Zone.” Police officers will now ticket
drivers found speeding over 25mph (rather than 30mph limit as on most NYC
streets) in this area. Since 2008, 22 people have been killed by cars in
this stretch, a statistic we would like to limit to 0 for the future.
Please help us save lives by driving at lower speeds and remaining
conscious of all others who use our streets including cyclists and
pedestrians. With your help, we can achieve Vision Zero.

*An Important Update from the Social Security Administration regarding SSI
Benefits:* I wish to inform you of an important change that will take
place October
1, 2014 that may affect some of the people whom you serve who receive
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in New York State.

SSI is a program based on need administered by the Social Security
Administration (SSA). SSI pays a monthly cash benefit to people age 65 and
older or people who are blind or disabled, regardless of age, who meet
certain basic program requirements. The SSI payment may be comprised of a
federal cash benefit and a state supplement. In New York State, the state
supplement is often combined with the federal payment and issued as a
single payment.

Beginning October 1, 2014, New York State will issue its own State
Supplement Payment (SSP) while SSA will pay the federal cash benefit that
is due. This means that people who receive SSI in New York and who
currently receive a combined federal and state supplement will receive two,
separate payments – one from SSA and another from New York State. Their *total
*payment amount will not change. If the individual only receives a SSP,
that will be paid by the State. *While the payments will be separated
beginning October 1, 2014, the SSI rules remain unchanged. *If you or those
you serve have questions about the New York State Supplement Payment, you
must call the New York State SSP Customer Support Center by phone at
855-488-0541.

****LG/USA PALISADES UPDATE*** *

We are pleased that the Town of Englewood Cliffs voted last week to restore
the 35-foot zoning height limit, an important step towards preserving the
regional treasure that is the Palisades. The Concerned Residents of
Englewood Cliffs should be applauded for their efforts. But LG still has a
variance to build to 143-feet, and we must continue to keep up the pressure
to avert this development which would destroy a national landmark and
treasure. Confidential negotiations with LG are underway, a resumption of
last year's mediation effort which failed to reach an agreement, though
that was before the public education campaign really took root. And
lawsuits challenging LG’s variance are pending in New Jersey court. Working
together, many people have accomplished much. But the threat to the
Palisades remains, and we must remain vigilant and active. Watch this space
for future activity in the late summer and early fall to help Protect the
Palisades. And for recent local (NJ) coverage and an excellent editorial,

.

Also, the Palisades Meetup-Cleanup meets on the first Sunday of every month
at Ross Dock, where they assemble to clean up the trash on the trails and
picnic grounds. This is a joint effort between the Palisades Insterstate
Park and the Appalachian Mountain Club. For more information, visit
www.njpalisades.org. *Sunday, September 7th, 10am – 1pm. *

In addition:

· Help spread the word about LG's development and its threat to the
historical and landmarked Palisades.

· Consider carefully the character of the company from which they
chose to buy their cell phones, TVs, washing machines, etc. This is *not* a
"boycott."

· Joining the Protect the Palisades Meetup group will let you know
about events and make it easy to register for them, and will help us gather
new supporters. It is especially important for those who are coordinating
events to join our Meetup Group:http://www.meetup.com/Protect-the-Palisades/.
