Dear Neighbor,

I hope that you and your families have been able to stay safe during the recent 
storm and its aftermath. I am truly thankful to report that our community avoided
much of the damage that other areas of our city experienced.

Unfortunately, many neighborhoods in NYC were not as lucky, and some residents who
needed to evacuate are currently staying in evacuation shelters in our area. If 
you would like to volunteer your time or donate (either goods or money) to help

and follow the instructions there.

Additionally, with power remaining off in lower Manhattan, the annual Halloween 
Parade in Greenwich Village has been cancelled. Many Halloween festivities in our
neighborhood will continue, but please be careful and stay safe!

Mayor Bloomberg has confirmed that schools will remain closed for the remainder 
of this week to give relief workers time to repair the 200 damaged schools and get
all of them ready to welcome students again. Teachers and administrators, however,
have been asked to try to make it to work on Friday to prepare for the resumption
of school on Monday.

Finally, as many of you already know, I am sponsoring my annual Community Health
 Fair on Saturday, November 3rd, at the Children's Aid Society - Frederick Douglass
Center (885 Columbus Avenue at West 104th Street). The fair will go on as planned.
The event will run from 11AM to 3PM. Some of the free services available include
 blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and foot health screenings; HIV and Hepatitis
C testing; and more! There will even be a free raffle of gift cards to Whole Foods
and local restaurants.

We are also offering free flu shots this year, a first for my Health Fair. If you
would like to reserve a shot, please contact my office by sending an email to beirnea at assembly.state.ny.us

so we can reach you to schedule a time slot. Supplies are limited!
