Dear Neighbor,

On the Upper West Side we are mostly back to normal after Hurricane Sandy, but our
downtown and outer borough neighbors continue to need our help. As time goes on,
it is increasingly important for us to keep them in our thoughts and continue to
help them. To that end, here are several things you can do:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Riverside Church is still accepting donations all week from 9:00am to 9:00pm. They
are located at 490 Riverside Drive, at 120th Street. They are not accepting clothing
donations anymore, but they are especially interested in receiving blankets, hats,
batteries and flashlights, diapers, and canned goods. Call them at 212-870-6700
for more information.
Clothing and blankets can still be donated at Modell's store on 98th Street and
Columbus.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW-NYC) has received a special request
from the city - they need social workers to volunteer at the city's 15 emergency
shelters immediately. Both residents and staff at the shelters may be in need of
social work support, from mental health and crisis counseling to help coordinating
needed services and benefits.
Interested social workers should call 347-396-7950. Please do not simply arrive
at a shelter - call first! They especially need social workers to cover the night
shift, from 8:00pm to 8:00am. They will try to accommodate shorter shifts, but they
would prefer workers who are available for the full twelve hours.
Voting Information
As you all know, tomorrow is Election Day, and it has not been unaffected by Sandy.
Here is some information that I hope will assist you in casting your ballot:
The State Board of Elections has established a toll-free number to assist voters
with questions about voting, poll site changes, and absentee ballots. The number
is 1-855-NYS-SANDY (1-855-697-7263).
Check your registration status at https://voterlookup.elections.state.ny.us/ [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WB-0Qt-OY5uiXw0oorWnnIO5CMKzkcTCIkE5uUbuGxJXU3vSwihhLBY158oHXSGRl6iwEyRgz1AwpMEyWT7MJqdv4vXbbxZ3XFpwk5qlyq_wUxk9QM7es5PDRnNX_JLvC2hqpZVxWcM=].
You can vote by absentee ballot in person until 9:00pm today at the temporary location
of the Manhattan Borough Office at 450 W. 33rd St., 10th floor. You need to provide
identification to be allowed into the building. Visit http://vote.nyc.ny.us/html/temp_hours/temp_hours.shtml
[http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WB-0Qt-OY5u3-4urkln330VNLkkW9wdm_4LuOy7zmeTHL6mN7R5wBjJky7lg-RVBf7GpDqieg996SlowzvWjZTt0QyNjYaUssgMghvAJRcE23WkaaB1gDxS4JO7cCPfVEeluZOYNPp_bSBXcQ_jZH3lSYmvmc4Nd]
for information about other boroughs' offices.
If you need to mail your absentee ballot, it must be postmarked today, November
5th. However, the state has extended the deadline for it to be received by the local
Board of Elections until November 19th.
For Election Day voting, visit http://gis.nyc.gov/vote/ps/index.htm [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WB-0Qt-OY5tbb9UTgP2jhKEJ2ni_p0dGT6ATaMmFsZqDliME0cVUXOusbOjpCiukHamz3BOz-am7_TOGWaowmBVa9rgzvJr5HiwnzbX8EuKDgnO198GFiiXmwQhZ_13aaygqNNEto0k=]
to find your poll site and view a sample ballot for your location. Sandy has not
affected the locations of poll sites on the UWS, but this website does contain
information on what poll sites elsewhere in NYC have been changed. Both voters and
poll site workers can check http://www.elections.ny.gov/ [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WB-0Qt-OY5tMfrE1LOSwvKwncNxrvgl5aoNLt-c_qov-hDTnz4-gsn-8m_Yff-9YZ5-TBWvLD1C7Z55yCRipL9bbedOBu3TlAx2VxX3XncX10AHxxLlcnw==]
and http://vote.nyc.ny.us [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WB-0Qt-OY5vF-j-v3dHko62BwN4_3R7oZZK-BPRjaWGFlwP3arF0UdS6jIa4hrnt2tdVUyUdy4mQuB6OuFhtZJkXlUrfPnGpjVkh5HxaCEc=]
for more current updates.
Alternatively, find your poll site by texting "NYCVOTES" to 877-877. Message and
data rates may still apply. Customers can text 'STOP' to opt out of further messages.
The polls will be open from 6:00am to 9:00pm on Tuesday, and no ID is necessary
to vote.
