Dear Broadway Democrats,

Hope you're having a great week so far.  As you know from reading these updates,
 my office has been very active around the issue of youth violence.  Last year, 
we formed the El Barrio/East Harlem Youth Violence Task Force and released an extensive

based on a series of community conversations with our young people.

Tonight, I am co-sponsoring a Stop the Violence march here in El Barrio/East Harlem
where elected officials and community members will gather to call for an end to 
the violence that has taken so many precious young lives from us too soon.  Please
join us at 5 pm at Jefferson Park (1st Avenue between 113th and 114th Streets), 
rain or shine!  We will depart for our march and conclude with a rally at East 106th
Street and 3rd Avenue.

On Saturday, there will also be a Mother's Day protest against the NYPD's out-of-control
marijuana arrests and Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly's policing practices,
which are dividing our city. Meet us at Foley Square (4/5/6 to Brooklyn Bridge/City
Hall) at 12 PM to take action against costly, illegal, and biased marijuana arrests.
 And stay tuned for details on a huge march against stop and frisk that's being 
planned for Father's Day.

We all know how important youth programs are to providing positive alternatives 
for our young people, but this is something the Bloomberg administration doesn't
 seem to understand.  Proposed budget cuts are threatening to close 12 after-school
programs in our district alone - the highest number in all of Manhattan, and the
 third-highest citywide.  This could literally mean that hundreds of young people
and families in our district alone could find themselves left out on the street 
after school next fall.

To truly reduce violence in our communities, we need enrichment, not just enforcement.
 We will be working with our after-school providers and members of the Youth Violence
Task Force to make that message loud and clear.  We will tell the administration
 that communities like ours cannot accept such deep cuts to services that contribute
to the positive development of our youth and the safety of our neighborhoods.
