Hey There,

It's been quite a week. From launching Participatory Budgeting on Sunday, to championing
the cause of Trayvon Martin, and everything in between, we've been very busy. But
I can't really complain about so much good work being done. Some of these projects
have taken months, some were spur of the moment, but each was the right thing to
do.

To date, 732 district residents have cast their ballots in the PB process. People
really care about what happens here, and PB has empowered them to decide which needs
should be prioritized. It really is amazing. I overheard one constituent on the
West Side saying, "This really feels like democracy." I agree completely. I saw
young men and women walk in to my office and vote. For many, it was their first
time casting a ballot. It just shows that when you show people that politics can
affect their lives, they will respond and participate.

You can still vote, in my district office at 105E 116th street, until 5PM today.
Or join us tomorrow:

Saturday, March 31st, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
SCAN La Guardia - 307 E. 116th St.

Betances Senior Ctr - 401 St. Ann's Ave.

On Wednesday, I stood with my colleagues for two important events [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109661487456&s=119&e=001BfktWDU2rCCaUX-PYjN_BwhPqN8-Xu4CRD_HNS-LailB2Th9vt9McMJwTGLU34DxwPWky4dRptwjUMnReXcq9d4ZQgElEVyY01JAsI553Oic8vibrwhPc5PKfWIt11srUZQd6SDNX2LAlAcqXcVQ-6phTNq5p6F6kXiJYsHoN3_T-g2yZTkvaNgcZYDHDM4q2YPlArstEVcM44niG46J8Y0htlcNIum_eGCMgUe2SmA_WMI5n3Rx41hYgwE4bAhfpHA_bSfrcFWYTJ7sBU08pQ==].
First, the immigrant community and its allies rallied to send the state a strong
message: Pass the Dream Act, or else. We are registering immigrants TO VOTE as
quickly as we can so that they can apply necessary pressure on their elected representatives.
This issue is our first priority. We should not deny education to any member of
our democracy, especially those who have demonstrated the aptitude to succeed. And
immigrant children are no different. The state must pass the Dream Act.

Following that rally, my colleague Tish James (D35) and I held a press conference
to show our support for Trayvon Martin. Several Council Members, including Speaker
Quinn, dawned hoodies in memory of this fallen youth. Most importantly, we joined
our voice to the national call for justice in his case.

created by Trayvon's mother and father, to express your support.

George Zimmerman must be brought to justice. Moreover, as several of my colleagues
remarked, NY-ers must persistently draw the line against policies that protect vigilantes
and defend racist prejudices from scrutiny - this includes STOP and FRISK.

Lastly, we succeeded in passing the Prevailing Wage for Building Service Workers.
This legislation would require building owners to pay higher wages to janitors,
cleaners, security guards and other workers in structures that the city subsidizes
or where it leases space. In other words, it will ensure that economic success benefits
many more people, particularly blue-collar workers for whom every dollar of their
salaries matters. I want to salute all of the advocates who helped pull this legislation
over the finish line. It wasn't easy, but we did it and everyday New Yorkers will
benefit because of it!

What a week...

Best,

Melissa
