A Note from Assembly Member O'Donnell

Summer greetings! With the record-breaking heat, the past month has been a slow
and humid one for our community. However, big things are on the horizon both in
the 69th Assembly District and in Albany. A number of bills that the Assembly and
State Senate both passed during this past spring's legislation session are pending
the Governor's signature or veto. One of my own bills, A10184, is among that group
and currently awaiting consideration. The bill would allow the Department of Education
to standardize bus driver contracts for pre-K/special needs children and K-12 children
(the two groups are currently treated differently), and ensure that all our children
receive high-quality and safe transportation to school.

In our community, I encourage you to attend the first of my two annual Community
Health Fairs this coming Saturday, August 18th, on La Salle Street between Broadway
and Amsterdam Avenue. Many helpful organizations with be in attendance, providing
both free health services and information. There will also be a free raffle with
donated prizes from local restaurants and grocery stores! For a list of the attending
organizations and more detailed information, please see the box below.

I also want to send a huge "thank you" to all of those in the community who participated
in my annual Cell Phone Drive! The Drive benefited Secure the Call, an organization
that provides cell phones for emergency use to seniors and victims of domestic violence.
This year, we collected almost 60 cell phones, a record number. Thanks to all who
contributed!

As always, should you need assistance or information, my Community Office is open
and ready to help from 9AM -5:30PM. With the Assembly not currently in session,
I am in my Community Office most days and want to help any way I can. Feel free
to call my office at (212)866-3970 or email me at odonnelld at assembly.state.ny.us.
I look forward to seeing many of you out in the community this month!

Applying to High School in NYC?

If your child is applying to high school here in NYC, the process can be complicated
and sometimes even overwhelming. To help explain the process and guide students
and parents through the various necessary steps, the Center for Urban Pedagogy,
in coordination with the Resilience Advocacy Project, teaching artist Douglas Paulson,
and high school students from all over NYC, created a fun informational video and
website.

To watch the video and read more about the high school application process, visit
the website here:
