THE EXECUTIVE THINKING SKILLS

You may not know it-but you have within you, within your brain, executive functions and powers.  These executive functions are what enable you to be human; they distinguish you from the animals; and they enable you to not only take control of your life- but to be the Captain of your soul.  How important are these Executive Functions?

Neuro-scientist Elkhonon Goldberg (2009) describes these executive functions.

"The frontal lobes perform the most advanced and complex functions in all of the brain, the executive functions.  They are linked to intentionality, purposefulness, and complex decision making." (p. 5)   

Antonio R. Damasio (1994) describes the executive functions as privileged in terms of their functions and positioning in brain anatomy.

"The prefrontal cortices contain some of the few brain regions privy to signals about virtually any activity taking place in our beings' mind or
body at any given time. ... [they] receive signals from several bio-regulatory sectors of the human brain... The prefrontal sectors are indeed in a privileged position among other brain systems.  Their cortices receive signals about existing and incoming factual knowledge related to the
external world; about innate biological regulatory preferences, and about previous and current body state..." (p. 181)

November 11 is the next ISNS Wisdoms and we will focus on the 5 Executive Thinking Skills.  Once you have developed your 5 Grounding Skills and your 4 Creative Skills - you can now use your Executive Skills for being the Executive in your Own Company, the Company of Self.  

Now you can executive set learnings that will become your programs for living and being productive.
Now you can make executive decisions using your values and criteria for what's important for making really smart decisions about how to conduct your life.
Now you can make executive discernments so that your thinking and deciding is not just smart, but wise.
Now you can use your executive reflections to "go meta,” meta-learning, meta-think, meta-decide, and then run ecology checks for the quality of all of your thinking and when you find something lacking, you can use your reflections to correct it.
Now you can make executive sacrilizing choices- choices for how to live beyond mere instrumental living, to non-instrumental living, to using your being-cognition for savoring life, enjoying life, and life fully alive/fully human.

All of your thinking skills and powers culminate in the Executive Powers. Here you will discover the ultimate power of the human mind.  Join us on November 11.
