Inspiring the Heart:

Unleashing Inspiration

How's your heart? Do you take heart everyday no matter what happens and
maintain an optimistic attitude or do you easily lose heart? Whatever you
do and to whatever degree-it will make the difference between living a
joyous and satisfying life versus one of despair and misery.

Like the body needs vitamins, your heart needs inspiration to stay vigorous.
Your heart needs meaning, but not only meaning, it needs a special kind of
meaning-meaning-fulness. And there's really only one source for that kind
of meaning-the being-realm. This is the special realm where human beings can
become fully alive/fully human. It is the abundance area where we become
what we are at our essence-meaning-makers.

Inspiring the Heart will take you on a journey inside, a journey into your
meaning-making powers and expose you to the being realm where you will find
the being-values. Here you will discover the very structure of hope and the
structure of inspiration so that you can tap into its power to sustain your
mind-and-emotions, and beyond, to your very spirit or heart.

Because human life is most essentially an inside-out experience, Inspiring
the Heart picks up where Inside-Out: Empowered from Within (2022) ends and
continues the journey -a journey designed to unleash inspiration into you
and into the world around you.

PREFACE

"We search constantly for people, things, ideas, or experiences

that ultimately toughen our hearts and bring meaning to our lives."

Kiyoshi Suzaki, Results from the Heart

I

wrote Inside-Out: Empowered From Within (2022) to highlight one of the most
basic and important principles in human psychology. Human life is
ultimately and essentially an inside-out affair. In spite of this- most
people do not live life that way. They do not experience it as inside-out,
but as outside-in. Of course, that is actually an illusion and an illusion
that creates lots of limitations and problems.

Now true enough, what is outside does influence us and does get in. In
fact, what is outside influences us powerfully precisely because we take it
in and use it as our own operational pattern. We receive the ideas, facts,
understandings, beliefs, values, references, etc. from the outside that we
hear on the lips of those around us, and we then use them as our own.

"What explains this?" you ask. The singular fact that we are all born
without any thoughts, understandings, beliefs, values, or references of our
own. In the first years of childhood, everything is outside-in. What gets
in is directly related to the family, school, and culture in which we live.
Later, as your brain begins to develop its higher executive functions (your
prefrontal cortex), you can then begin to reverse the outside-in orientation
and live inside-out.

If Inside-Out is the psychological principle, Inspiring the Heart delivers
what you mostly need on the inside-quality meanings that inspire you. These
are the ideas you construct on the inside.

It is not enough that you are a meaning-maker, which you are. If you want
the richest quality of life possible, you have to create high quality
meanings that touch the heart and that enlivens your spirit. If what you
are inside ultimately governs your life, then knowing how to inspire your
heart's

highest meanings will determine your vitality, well-being, aliveness,
humanity, vision, integrity, joy, productivity and much, much more.

It is one thing to live and to be alive, it is an entirely different thing
to be fully alive/ fully human. That phrase describes living above and
beyond the life of an animal, gratified in your basic needs for surviving,
being safe, being connected socially, and feeling important (your
biological, social, and psychological needs). Do all of that, as many
people do, and your heart may still be uninspired and you may not want to
live, or feel that you have anything to live for. How can that be?

It's due to our dual nature. Maslow explained that while we have a lower
nature, one which we share with the animals and are driven, as they are, by
the deficiency needs, we also have a higher nature. And that's what makes
all the difference. It is that higher nature of being that enlivens you to
live for so much more than mere gratification of your lower needs. These
are the being-needs and they refer to the being-realm where we become truly
and fully human. Here we strive for the being-values of knowledge, meaning,
beauty, order, contribution, excellence, justice, etc. Here we become fully
human/fully alive as we actualize the highest and most profound potentials
that are within us waiting to be awakened.

To be human is to be awake in a way that extends far beyond just the
sensory-awareness of animals. It is to be awake in a very special way-
namely, awake to the mystery of life, awake to the beauty of life, and awake
to the possibilities before you. It is to be alive also in a special way
that goes beyond the life of animals. It is to be alive to the hidden
potentials within you and in every other person. And when you are awake and
alive in these ways, you will experience an inner inspiration. You will be
infused with a spirit of curiosity, wonder, delight, love, respect,
collaboration, care, wisdom, and much more.

I have written Inspiring the Heart to tell the story of how this inner
aliveness works, how you can experience this inspiration for yourself, and
how you can become a bearer of the light-someone who inspires the hearts of
others.

In Inside-Out, I noted that both motivation and inspiration are inside-out.
Human energy, vitality, passion, etc. all come from the inside. Given that,
what is "inside" that needs inspiration? What needs to be infused with
spirit? Answer-our need to be who and what we are, and can be. These
being-needs and values are not instrumental, but end-values. They are
valuable in and of themselves. But they are that only if you see them and
use them as such. That's where you as a meaning-maker come in to make the
attribution. If you do not do that, then they will not hold the
inspirational value for you.

I'll spell out what this means. It means that you become more human when
you cognitively appreciate the B-values and endow them with high quality
meanings. Then you become more alive with an inner vitality. Then you set
robust intentions to make those B-values your purpose.

In today's world there is tremendous need for good news, for hope, for
optimism-for inspiration. The strange thing is, however, we have a raging
bad news and fear industry-the news media. Research for decades has shown
that the more hours a person watches TV, the more paranoid that person will
be. That person will think that the world is much more dangerous than it
is.

What's missing is an inspiration industry. We need an industry whose sole
purpose and design is to put heart into people, to inspire them to hope for
a better tomorrow.

Transcending What's Typically Unhelpful

If you ask, as I have been asked many times, "What is the biggest problem
with self-help books?" My answer is actually pretty simple. The problem is
that people confuse learning and knowing with doing. They read and then
they move on with their lives. They don't act on what they learn. Why not?
It's due to a particular delusion-they think that they now "know." Worse,
they feel good that they "know." And so, they assume that they can do.
Most of the time, they cannot. Assuming that knowing automatically means
doing, and doing well, is the wrong-headed assumption that gets people in
trouble.

I have designed and included two sections at the end of each chapter to
address this problem, but of course, no one can make you learn or implement.
At best I can only point to the door, you have to walk through those doors.
Here are the doors:

Toward a Fully Inspired Heart is designed to summarize the point
and the insights of the chapter and identify what you can do to use them in
enriching your life. Insights un-acted upon will change nothing. Reading
without reflecting and without taking specific action will not close the
Knowing-Doing Gap and so will have little affect on your inspiration.

Heart Pondering is then offered to invite you to do something
immediate, namely to reflect on your learnings and write down what you are
taking away. I recommend that you get a journal to record your answers in
as you reflect. The purpose is that you first become an inspirational
person to yourself and then become an inspirational leader to others. As
one of "the more, the more" intangibles in the being-realm, inspiration
expands exponentially when you set out to intentionally inspire people
around you.

If You Want More

Beyond Inside-Out: Empowered From Within (2022), I have written several
other books to focus on becoming "fully alive/fully human."

              Unleashed! The Ultimate Self-Actualization (2007)

              Get Real: Unleashing Authenticity. (2016)

              Resilience: Being the Phoenix (2021).
