Re: Olympics, 2016 Rio de Janeiro
I've been watching the Olympics this week- swimming, gymnastics, diving,
volleyball, soccer, etc. as I'm guessing many of you are too. I have also
been reflecting about the Olympics in terms of what we do in
Neuro-Semantics, namely, synergize meaning and performance.
What's most obvious, of course, in the Olympics is performance--- world
class performance. Here are those who have demonstrated their expertise
over time and who are the best of the best.
What's amazing about the performances is that if there is ever performance
under pressure- this is it! And most of the Olympiads only have one chance
at the performance, in some of the events they may get two chances. Yet
under "pressure" some are exceeding and some are shrinking. Of course, the
"pressure" they are under is big time--- they are being seen by
tens-of-millions from people in hundreds of countries! They are being
video-taped and every excellence or mistake is immediately being seen on
close-up instant-replay video.
What's the difference between those who step up and handle the pressure and
those who don't? Well, that's where meaning comes in. If they turn it into
a statement about their value, their human worth, or their success/failure
as a person--- then they will multiple the pressure and get overwhelmed. If
they can release the pressure by treating it as an experience or as an
experiment, then they can use it for learning--- to shape their next
performance.
Watching the swimmers and the gymnastics, the difference sometimes between
Gold and Silver or Bronze is .03 of a second! Three-hundredths! Not a
second, not a tenth of a second, three-hundreds of a second. And so how
many variables would be involved in that? Their state of mind, how they
slept, what they ate, what's happening back at home, what someone aid to
them prior to the events, and on and on.
I've been watching the team spirit of the teams from many different
countries--- and the difference that it makes when the teams that support
each other. They may be "competitors" for individual performances, and so
many of them hug and greet and cheer for each other in those performances.
Here's collaboration at its best.
In fact, here is national collaboration--- all of the various nations on the
planet coming together to present their champions and to compete --- and yet
to compete within a larger frame--- one of collaboration.
And the bottom line is that no matter what country an Olympiad comes from,
when there's an emotional victory--- and team-makes and parents, friends,
and others are celebrating--- it is a human experience par excellence!
