U

ntil a couple years ago, I would have been shocked if you told me that I
would write a book about politics. Yet here I am having written a whole
book about politics. Why? What in the world has led to this? There are
several answers. One primary reasons stands out: Politics on Planet Earth
are in trouble. If you think that politics on this planet are just fine,
please put down this book immediately and run as fast as you can. This book
is not for you! If you buy this book, you will be disturbed. You'll be
shaken out of the delusion that "things are fine," or that, "We humans are
on the right track." I've written these pages because I don't think things
are fine and I don't think we're on the right track. But we could be.

I've written this book because we could get on the right track. Now to get
on the right track politically, there's a couple things that we will need.
First, we will need a solid philosophical and psychological foundation that
fits human nature as it really is. We also will need to be able to have the
kind of political conversations that facilitate clarity and sanity. We need
these things because of the following inescapable political facts.

1) Politics are everywhere. In speaking about politics, I'm not exclusively
talking about professional politics- the politics of governments. I'm also
talking about the politics in the office, in organizations, in associations,
in churches and mosques and clubs, and even around the family table.
Wherever people are figuring out how to get along, make decisions, and

influence others to see their point of view, politics is there. It is in
these areas that we humans are not doing so well. We seem to forever be in
distressful conflict-arguing, yelling, worrying, suing, etc. instead of
having sane and effective conversations.

2) Today international politics is local. Wherever you go, our 24-hour news
cycle now means that major events (and not so major events) are minutes away
from being known by millions, even billions, all over this planet. If the
image of the earth as a global village has ever been true, today it is true
with a vengeance. With every passing day it is becoming a smaller village
with all of us more interdependent.

3) Politics plays a critical factor in all of our lives. The key to our
lives, politics is more central than almost anyone suspects or imagines.
Charles Krauthammer (2013) explains:

"Politics, the crooked timber of our communal lives, dominates everything
because, in the end, everything . . . lives and dies by politics. You can
have the most advanced and efforescent of cultures, get your politics wrong,
however, and everything stands to be swept away." (p. 2)

"Politics-in all its grubby, grasping, corrupt, contemptible manifestations
-is sovereign in human affairs. Everything ultimately rests upon it.
Fairly or not, politics is the driver of history." (p. 129)

If everything rises and falls on politics-business, economy, education,
infrastructure (roads, sewers, water, etc.), without a healthy positive
politics by which we create an effective and efficient government, things
deteriorate to jungle life. We see this happening regularly in military
cues and in mob actions. Unchecked this would lead to a ruthless anarchy
where the strongest or the most ruthless run the show.

4) Politics describes how we unite. When we create families, villages,
groups, communities, businesses, churches, mosques, corporations, cities,
states, countries, unions, associations, and every other social group we
activate "politics." When you have human beings attempting to combine
forces, work together, cooperate on an adventure, etc., you have politics-
the processes of connection and organization.

5) Politics is inescapable. It is inescapable because where you have even
two people living together-you have "politics." It is the nature of how we
human beings interact, cooperate, compete, work together, fight for
resources, make decisions, and organize our relating to each other. We are,
by our very nature, political.

Abraham Maslow talked about building human societies in terms of how to
create a "good society." He asked, "How good a society does human nature
permit? How good a human nature does society permit?" Then regarding the
process of specifying the methods for achieving a good society he noted that
this is what politics means (1971, p. 203).

Politics and My Life

As a modeler of human excellence for more than twenty-five years I have
modeled the structure of excellence in communication, in leaders, coaches,
entrepreneurs, in highly resilient people, in self-actualizing
organizations, in generative change, in peak performances, etc. As I have
traveled to more countries than I can count to share my findings, I have
experienced politics in many countries and regimes. At a superficial level,
the politics in the various countries have set governing rules for my
entrance into their country, what I can and cannot bring with me, what I can
and cannot do there, where I can go and not go, and much more.

At a deeper level, as when I enter China, a sign threatens imprisonment for
a minimum of five years if I say the words, "Taiwan ought to be a free and
independent country" or if I have any literature promoting that idea. My
first time to Egypt was during the time when Hosni Mubarak was president.
My sponsors strongly urged me, "Say nothing that could be interpreted as a
criticism of the government." Why? "Because it is against the law and if
the police took you into custody, we would have no influence to help you."

Along the way I have explored with many people the politics of their
country-the elections (if there are elections, not so in China, and only
minimally in Hong Kong), what's happening on the ground, how it affects
them, their experience of it, their beliefs about it, and much more.
Politics govern their way of life in hundreds of ways. Some years ago we
had one of our Neuro-Semantic trainers in Venezuela who was not allowed to
leave the country with more than $500 US dollars. Even today, there are
severe limitations for people in China, Morocco and other countries for
transferring money out of their countries.

Why This Book?

Today in the field of Meta-Coaching, more and more coaches are coaching city
counsels, mayors, and even some nationally elected officials. We also have
hundreds of Executive Coaches who deal with politics in the C-Suite and all
of the politics that goes on in the various departments and silos of larger
corporations. This book will assist Political Coaching in these contexts in
the following ways.

1) Describe the vision of positive self-actualizing politics.

Provide a description of what politics could be at its best. What would our
politics be like if they were healthy and served the best in human nature?
What would our politics be if we had self-actualizing politicians? To
address these questions, we will focus first on the nature, philosophy, and
psychology of politics (Political Science) and then on Political Coaching.

2) Identify the Political Conversations needed to create positive politics.

If we start from Self-Actualization Psychology, what would self-actualizing
politics and politicians be like? How would they handle the everyday
challenges that involve politics?

3) Identify the Skills necessary for developing Self-Actualizing politics.

What skills are required for political coaching to facilitate great coaching
conversations for those who work in the area of politics? How does a person
coach elected officials and organizational executives in dealing with
politics in government or in corporations? Since coaching involves
facilitating people to engage in a very special conversation-a conversation
like none other, what conversation would a political coach facilitate?

The Vision

A final word. I've written this book with an eye on the future which has
not been created. Because the future is open for creation, we can change
it. The politics of the past have been discouraging and appalling. Most of
the politics of the past has been the politics of manipulation, control,
corruption, graft, distortion, lies, etc. Mostly politics to-date has
demonstrated the worst aspects of human nature and itself has been corrupted
by corrupt theories, ethics, and behaviors. Yet it doesn't have to be that
way. Nor do we have it accept that politics has to continue in these old
ways. We can generate a whole new political philosophy- one based on
Self-Actualization Psychology.

Among the people who are changing the face of politics now and into the
future are those in the new fields of Executive Coaching and Political
Coaching. Then there are the brave and courageous men and women in
executive positions, whether in business or in government positions, who in
the spirit of Nelson Mandela are bringing a new vision of what politics
(formally or informally) can be- political leaders. Therefore this book is
for:

1) Professional politicians who want to change the paradigm and operate as
self-actualizing politicians, demonstrating positive and healthy politics.

2) Business leaders who deal with politics in their companies and
organization and who want to change the business culture so that it
transcends the politics as usual and moves to a higher level.

3) Collaborators-people who work with other people for achieving a mutual
vision and mission: entrepreneurs, business owners, team members, boards,
committees, counsels, clubs, etc.

4) People who care about the state of politics and want to make a positive
contribution that will enable all of us to change the politics of yesterday
into a new form for tomorrow.

5) Coaches who work with politicians, groups and teams, executives, or
anyone dealing with human politics and who want to facilitate
self-actualization in people, one conversation at a time.

The first section of this book (chapters 1-9) is written to identify a
Political Framework that fits Self-Actualization Psychology. It sets the
foundation for the experience of Political Coaching (chapters 10-13). The
third section details eight different kinds of Political Coaching
Conversations (chapters 14-21). The final section focuses on Political
Leadership (chapters 22-24) and details the self-actualizing leadership of
Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela. Each chapter ends with a summary
statement which calls for unleashing self-actualizing politics.
