Whatever It Takes!

It's happened more than once. In a training for trainers, I've been asked by
some of those in attendance "What do I have to do to have a job like yours,
or be able to do what you do?" This is a great modelling question. The best
way to replicate an outcome achieved by someone else is to ask them how did
they do it. Makes sense to ask this. The answer you get will provide you
with an insight into the "how" of their success. You're better able to take
advantage of their knowledge and the lessons they have learnt on the road to
being successful, in doing so you'll save time and eliminating wasted
effort. Whether it's to be an exceptional Trainer or Coach, it's very
important for you to listen to the answer. And then decide whether you are
willing to do what they have done, to gain success - or not.
The Answer
In response to this question, as I stand in front of some 60 trainers whom
I've been with for 5 days. Each one positioning themselves better to hear
the response I have to this question. I ask them "... How many of you are
willing to invest between $5,000 - $7,000's every year on your own personal
development - irrespective of whether your employer pays for it or not. How
many of you are willing to invest no less than 10% of your gross income each
year as a financial contribution to your professional and personal
development to be a trainer or coach?"
I new the approximate salary band of those in the room ($50K - $70K) . I
also new that there were in attendance, some who will not attend a training
unless their employer would sign it off for them to attend. I could see some
immediately some adjust how they were sitting in their chairs, moving back
in their chairs, folding their arms, looking away and showing on their faces
they were uncomfortable with my response.
I continued "... are you willing to do whatever it takes to succeed as a
Trainer? Or as a Coach? Will you read the top 5 books of the field to grow
your knowledge of the field? Not loan these books from the library, but
actually purchase them for yourself? Will you apply immediately, what you
have learnt here, over these few days. Or will you instead. Go home, read
your course notes and manual, read another book on the subject, search the
internet for more information and surf Youtube for video clips to watch. Buy
another book, Buy the latest DVD set on the slickest techniques. Hire an
internet Performance Coach and attend another refresher training. And still,
do NOTHING, with what you have learnt!
Will you apply immediately what you have learnt. Knowing that you don't have
it perfect yet, knowing that you will make a fool of yourself. As you
fumble your way through the techniques you've learned? Willing to learn from
applying what you know, as raw as your skill level may be. Willing to
receive feedback on how you're doing and making the necessary changes to
further develop yourself.
"How many are willing to do what it takes?" I ask determinedly. I then ask
for a show of hands.
You decide how many raised their hands. Would you have raised your hand -
really? Would you have?
Let's get back to the first response I gave initially. Would you invest 10%
of your gross income every year to grow yourself personally and
professionally. Don't tell me how you volunteer your time to others, or how
you read books regularly and surf the internet for free stuff to download.
What I want to know is - will you put up the money? Yes, that's right,
you're damn hard earned, sweat soaked money. Will you?
A Brief History Lesson
I went, many years ago now (1998), to my employer and asked if they would
support me to attend an 18 day NLP Practitioner Certification training. I
said I was certain this course would help me gain greater results for my
long term unemployed participants and increase my skills in attitudinal and
behavioural change. My boss, after looking over the content, said it was too
much out on the fringe of what they would support their tutors as
professional development. It was too "new agey" for them. So in shortthe
answer was - "...no, we wont support you by paying for this program for
you". I wasn't earning much money at the time, maybe $27K a year. I had no
savings. I had bills and family commitments. I believed that this course
would make a difference.
What did I do?
I went and got a loan. A loan of $8,000's to cover my time off work, travel
expenses, accommodation, meals while away, enough to cover my existing bills
while not earning an income and of course the training cost of the
Practitioner program. The training Company I worked for at the time was not
going to support me in this but would allow me to take the time off -
without pay.
Would you do that? Would you do what was needed? Or would you walk away and
let the opportunity go?
I did this for my NLP Practitioner program. I immediately applied what I
new. I didn't care if I was any good at it. I just did it anyway, and learnt
by doing. This gave me such great results that within 6 months I was asked
to be a Developmental Trainer for a large Government Department and now
earning $45k. The loan was paid back and I was in a better place because of
my consistent commitment to investing in myself.
I did this again for my NLP Master Practitioner certification and applied
what I new immediately, and within a few months I was asked to be the
National Training advisor, overseeing the country and training trainers. My
income had risen to earning a salary of $70K a year.
Are you getting a picture of what I am saying yet?
While doing these NLP trainings and training in Accelerated Learning, I
continued to purchase books, grow my knowledge of the field of Training &
Coaching, and immediately applying all I learnt.
Journey to NS Trainers Training
The year was 2002. I wanted to be a trainer of NLP and searched the
internet. I came across a training in Sydney. It was a Neuro Semantic & NLP
Trainers training. I new this was it. It was more than NLP and it was "new".
I asked my boss if they would support me financially to gain the
certification as an NS & NLP Trainer with the International Society of Neuro
Semantics.
The answer was NO! What a letdown.
They were willing to give me paid study time off for the 14 days I would be
away, which was a bonus. I had enough frequent flyers points to get me an
airline ticket for free , from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia. I
had contacts in Sydney so I could stay with them and save money on
accommodation. But I had no money for the course fee & meals while away! I
had financial commitments back at home.
What do I do? More importantly, what would you do?
Right! I got another loan!!!
I knew that I would return home after the NS Trainers training, and because
I could then certify people in NS & NLP that I would run trainings for the
12 months following and earn far more than what the training had cost me.
Which was a loan of approximately $6,000.00 's.
I attended NS Trainers training in late 2002 and returned home. In January
2003 I ran my first NS-NLP Practitioner training and made $14,000's in 7
consecutive days of training with only a handful of people in attendance.
That was the beginning. In 2003 - 2004 I left my previous job and teamed up
with Lena who would later, herself, become an NS Trainer. I earnt, as a
direct result of having my NS Trainers Training Certification from the ISNS
no less than $100,000's in my 1st 12 months after NS Trainers training! That
doesn't include earnings from corporate trainings in that first year of
starting my own business.
Let's do the sums. A $6,000 loan that bears a financial gain of $100,000's
return in income within 12 months of taking out the loan. (By the way I took
the loan repayments out over 18 months) Would you invest $6,000's to gain
$100,000's ? That was almost 7 years ago now. How much has that initial loan
to attend NS Trainers yielded? You guess. Was it worth it financially? This
is a "no-brainer" isn't it? Of course it was worth it!
Global Recessive Times
With the current global recession we need to be careful where we invest.
Property prices are still falling. Unemployment is rising. Banks are
offering lower interest rates (excellent!) but people are slow to loan, and
spend. In NZ our bank interest rates are in the low 4% range for long term
investments. The lowest for many years. People are wanting a sure return on
their investment. How can as a Coach or Trainer best take advantage of the
Recession and invest wisely?
My recommendation is, if you have all the required pre-requisites to attend
NS Trainers Training in Colorado this year then do whatever it takes to be
there. And if I had my time again. Yes I would get a loan (especially with
current low interest rates) to attend. I know for sure that I am not alone
as an NS Trainer who has turned the investment for NS Trainers Training into
a high return financial gain. (If you're an NS Trainer and done something
similar reply to this e-group- share your story)
At NS Trainers you will learn about the business of NS Trainings. How to
market, advertise, refer, invoice, website design etc... to ensure you are
well equipped to financially gain and grow your business opportunity as a
trainer of NS & NLP. You will receive all the training manuals you need to
run the foundational trainings (excellent) NS Practitioner, Master
Practitioner and Accessing Personal Genius. You will also be in front of not
only myself but also Dr. Michael Hall and Omar Salmon and an outstanding NS
support team of Trainers. Each committed to you maximising your initial
investment. I admit that there have been many enhancements to NS Trainers
Training which I wasn't exposed to in 2002. An added bonus for you and for
those of you who would like to re-attend.
Are you willing to invest in your financial future by doing whatever it
takes?
A Common Theme
If you're a Meta-Coach and not yet and NS Trainer then I highly recommend
you consider seriously about attending. Why? Let me briefly give you a few
names who are both a Meta-Coach and a NS Trainer. Michelle Duval, Graham
Richardson, Martin Urban, Cheryl Gilroy, Andrew Bryant, Germain Rediger,
Florent Fusier, Lena Gray, Joe Scott, Omar Salom, Jan Canton, Alan Fayter
and myself, to name a few . Those I named are all in business for
themselves, and all are both Meta-Coaches and NS Trainers.
Is there a common link?
YES! Grow your coaching skills and business by being a certified NS
Trainer. It's as simple as that!
Ok. Enough. I've told my story.
I hope other NS Trainers will share their story of how they have made
financial gains after attending NS Trainers, and encourage those who wish
to make Training & Coaching a career, to do what it takes.
Learn from those who have gone before you.
Attend NS Trainers Training this year in Colorado.
You only have 4 weeks to signal you're a definite by contacting Dr.Michael
Hall on meta at onlinecol.com .
I look forward to meeting you at 2009 NS Trainers Training.
When I see you there, I'll know - you did whatever it took to be there. And,
you'll remind me, then, that I did that too.
