18 YEARS IN THE MAKING
I am often asked about how long it takes to write a book and I commonly
contrast my first with my current. For my first book, Emotions: Sometimes I
have them/ Sometimes they have me! (1985) it took me eight years. Lately
I've been averaging 3 books a year. Then there is the latest book, the new
third edition of Meta-States (2008).
In 2007 I began updating and re-writing the text of Meta-States. I spent 4
months on that and then another 12 on the proof-reading. Now that the book
has been completed, if someone were to ask, "How long did it take
you to write Meta-States?" I would have to say, "18 years."
Yes, the original book in 1995 only took 3 months to put together and that
was because after the discovery of the Meta-States model in 1994 I wrote
furiously the following week and produced a 40-page document mapping out the
model which I then rewrote as several articles for various NLP journals. I
then followed that up with articles on several complex states that could now
be modeled using Meta-States: resilience, self-esteem, proactivity,
forgiveness, magnanimity, uninsultability, etc.
It may sound like the book was written in 3 or 6 months, but that only
describes the actual writing, not all the research that led up to it. For
years (1990 to 1994) I had been pouring over Korzybski and Bateson, writing
articles about their use of language, and especially the linguistic
distinctions not included into the Meta-Model (those articles eventually
became Communication Magic). I had also begun thinking about and trying to
relate their use of "levels" in "mind" -Bateson's levels of learning and
change and Korzybski's psycho-logical levels of abstracting to create our
sense of reality. So even the first book was the result of four years of
study as well as all of my NLP studies and trainings.
Once the book was produced I then spent the next six years training
Meta-States worldwide and learning many new distinctions. So in 2000 when I
updated the book, I cleaned out four significant mistakes in the first book
and included some of the discoveries that had occurred over those years.
After another seven and then eight years, I took to updating the book yet
again, this time especially redesigning it so that it included the story
that led to the discovery-the modeling resilience, as well as the language
and processes used in teaching Meta-States.
So how long did it take to write the new book Meta-States? It's been in the
making for a long time, back to 1990-so some 18 years.
