GETTING TO THE HEART OF THINGS
What if -
you had the skill of quickly and elegantly getting to the heart of things?
Would that be valuable? Would that be important? Would you like that?
What if -
you knew the secret for identifying the governing frames in yourself and others during a conversation and responding so effectively that you could unleash your best potentials and create win/ win arrangements?
Would that be worth your time, energy, and investment?
Would that enrich your life and skills?
Would you like that?
Well, you can!
This is what the Meta-Coach training is all about. We "coach" to get to the heart of things conversationally so that it brings out the best in everybody as it mobilizes potentials and liberates new creative possibilities. After all, "coaching" is an influentially focused conversation that empowers people to be more of who they can be and actualize their highest visions and values precisely because it gets to the heart of things.
And, I'm absolutely convinced about this. Absolutely.
"Absolutely? How can you be absolutely convinced? You don't even know me! Aren't you exaggerating and over-selling? How can you say that?"
I'm glad you asked. Here's what convinces me so absolutely.
His name is Troy. I met Troy a couple years ago and hired to handle some of the repair work on my rental properties. He turns the sprinkling systems on in the spring and then winterizes them in the fall. Now in his 40s, Troy is also a high school drop out and has struggled most of his life just to pay his bills. And while he has some natural skill with mechanical things, interacting with people is not his strength. Not by a long shot.
Well, recently Troy has had some significant heartbreaks in his personal life and real struggles in his business. He works for himself and trying to keep enough business has been a big problem for him. One day when he was really down and discouraged, I happened to catch him and asked about what was going on. After a few exchanges, he asked, for the first time, what I did. I said I empower people to live their highest meanings and take their performances to new levels of excellence. He asked if I was a counselor. "No, no way." I responded. "I am an empowerer of people so they can unleash their potentials."
All of that was a tease and Troy took it. That's when he asked me how I do that. Ah, the opening! So I took it:
"The psychology I work with starts from the idea that whatever problem or problems a person has is never about them. It is about their frames-their frames of mind and frames of meaning that they give to things. The person is never the problem; the frame is always the problem."
That relaxed him and he told me about having been forced to counseling in the past, "which never worked." I asked, "And what didn't work about it?" He told me that they kept telling him things to do "which I already knew. But they never told me how to do it. So it never worked."
After we talked a bit about frames I gave Troy a copy of Winning the Inner Game. Two days later, he called and said he was reading the book and had learned so much. "What's have you learned? What's new or different?" That's when he told me that he was catching all kinds of frames in his mind that was making him down and discouraged. He told me that he had begun to catch his frames, recognizing them as he spoke and had been changing them.
A week later I met him at one of my rentals and he said he was up to Chapter 13 on Covert Frames. "Yesterday I started catching those sneaky frames that have been defeating me." "Like what?" I asked him.
"Like the idea that I have to tell people want they want to hear or they won't give me work."
"And how is that a sneaky self-defeating frame?"
"Well, it makes me afraid to speak up to them and especially to tell the truth; it makes me lie to them and I know even while I'm lying that they are going to catch me and fire me, so then I try to lie more convincingly."
"That sounds pretty insightful."
"Now I see that the problem isn't the lying, it is the frame of fear. I have lied so much in my life I always thought that I was just a liar. Now I see I lied to try to get people to like me and give me a chance, but now I see what a sneaky frame that is and the mess its made!"
"And...?"
"Well, I have been changing that frame that people want the truth... just like you told me that you would prefer me to tell you when I can't get to a job rather than tell you I would and then not do it."
"That's great Troy! I'm really amazed at how elegantly you got to that covert frame and just changed it! That's tremendous!"
There's a lot more about that story. I tell you this much of it because it is my convincer-even a person without a high school education can pick up on the coaching skills and elegantly get to the heart of things and do so pretty quickly. Troy is now set on learning how to win the inner game in his own mind because he knows that once he does that, then he will be able to win the outer game of business, relationships, and happiness-the things he most wants to improve.
Are You Ready to Get to the Heart of things?
If you want to get to the heart of things, Meta-Coach and Neuro-Semantic trainings will first acquaint you about frames. First, you will tune yourself to recognize frames and frames-of-frames and the whole matrix of embedded frames. You will then discover how to enter the frames, explore them, and question them. Then you will be on your way to elegantly and powerfully have highly focused conversations that are highly influential-even with yourself.
Today most Coach Trainings schools or programs have not even made a clear distinction between therapy and coaching, training and coaching, consulting and coaching, hypnosis and coaching, etc. So they don't know the psychology that best fits coaching. Meta-Coaching is uniquely based on the positive psychology of Self-Actualization Psychology-the psychology for people who are basically healthy and ready to take life on.
So in spite of the name "coaching" - the trainings are about getting to the heart of things, to the frames that govern the inner game and then the outer games, and to the conversation that transforms the frames. And when you change the frame, you change the game.
