I'm pretty much done and I hope to release it in the near future. There are two things I've noticed when creating the theme: 1. The Geeklog engine is pretty much compliant to these standards, any non-valid html tends to be in the themes. 2. Most of the plugins and a few of the blocks are not web standard compliant. The following plugins in particular: * chatterblock (submitted a bug request to geeklogplugins) * staticpages 1.2 (the CVS of '1.3?' is better, though I think it still needs some work) * gallery random image block (at least the version I had) Note: I don't mean to single these out, but that is all the plugins and blocks I have installed on my Geeklog. I'm sure that there are more plugins/blocks that are not standards compliant. The biggest problems among both the themes and the plugins is missing 'alt' properties from image tags and missing 'type' properties (type="text/javascript") from script tags. Also the use of the '_' character in style sheets (which is not supported in the standard). Problems beyond these exists, this is just what I've noticed is most common. So, a request from me to all module developers on their future releases: try to make your HTML/CSS standard compliant. Thanks, Vinny P.S. In almost all the geeklog distributed themes the valign property is often spelled valigh. Fixing that and adding alt propeties to all the images _could_ make some of the themes pretty close to HTML 4.01 compliant. No real security to it yet so be nice ;-) As a reminder, this hack allows people to communicate with Geeklog via email. The code is pretty generic and could be used easily with just about any program. I moved the server code to www.geeklog.net and the client stuff is on my mail server. All interaction requires a command and a username (eventually a password). To get a list of all installed commands send a message to geeklog-test at lists.geeklog.net with this: command: help username: That should send you an email that explains that submitstory is the only command installed (new commands are easily added). Then to get help on a specific command email the same address with this: command: help submitstory username: That will return the details of the submitstory command. Then, per the message send a message with this: command: submitstory username: title: topic: mode: story: This *should* save a new story to the submission queue. I'll be adding security here shortly and then documenting this stuff. Not sure how usefull this really is to Geeklog as I know I won't personally use it but we have had requests for it and I thought it would be a fun challenge. They way it is built, it is VERY easy to add new commands which makes this of interest to plugins too. If you look at my submitstory command (both client and server) you should see how easy it is to modify it. Or have admin > commands as well -- this is why I say username password. I think security will be loose at best but when I do implement here is what I am thinking. 1) you must send email message from a registered email account. If not the command will be rejected. This is easily spoofed but it is a start since you can't get the email addresses for GL users. 2) you must provide GL username and GL password 3) Throttles to preven DoS attacks > Title: Could this just be taken from the subject If you use one email address for all commands the subject shouldn't be used. > Topic: Wouldn't this be better just taken from the address and Sendmail > alias. Our partner the Philippines government Presidents press office post to a number of sites. Whilst your method _is_ perhaps the simplest for a one site with limited postings if you are to post to 3 or four sites each with numerous topics there needs to be a simpler way and less top heavy. From our side posting is not always made by a computer literate person. Note: All sites are on the same server but each running under its own domain. Currently we use a program which takes the output from the news database and key words within the database decide which site and which category each item goes to. Site a: may have topics Education, Health and Ecology Site b: Business, Metro, Political, Health, Education Yes there is some overlap .... therefore with an alias and email address it is easier to direct an article to the two example sites with: - email address being unique for the site and topic - subject being the subject of the story - text of the email being the story with somesort of setting to automatically decide on the split. Your approach being generic would make the posting address public and available to all registered members and stack the items in the submission list. I think it is an admirable approach and will work very well - sadly our use is different and I am not sure if it would be possible to doctor your application to fit our rather customised needs. (I am told php-nuke can handle what we need with little alteration - but I am not very impressed with php-nuke hence we chose GL as a better tool). In our case all postings will come from trusted inputers and therefore would not require to be approved being safeguarded by origin of poster. We will install and examine your approach but feel the various lines of input at the beginning of the email is open to error, especially by those who are not computer literate. Having an email on a *per-site* basis make total sense. Having an alias on a "per-site/per-topic" basis doesn't. So, to be clear, you would want to have a siteA at domain1.com and a siteB at domain2.com address > > Yes there is some overlap .... > > therefore with an alias and email address it is easier to direct an > article to the two example sites with: > > - email address being unique for the site and topic > - subject being the subject of the story > - text of the email being the story with somesort of setting to > automatically decide on the split. > > Your approach being generic would make the posting address public and > available to all registered members and stack the items in the > submission list. Keep in mind this is a *framework* in which I added one sample command. To add administrative commands to fit your needs is quite simple. In otherwords, with little effort I could add a savestorybyadmin command that would pump a story into the GL database withotu needing moderation. I could also have it so you have a command called approvemoderation that would approve submissions quickly. Again, the exact commands you want are up to you, you just need to define them and have them coded (or have someone do it for you). I promise, the code needed to add a new command is trivial. > > I think it is an admirable approach and will work very well - sadly our > use is different and I am not sure if it would be possible to doctor > your application to fit our rather customised needs. Instead of guessing at this, can you type up a brief email of all the commands you would want along with a description of what each would do? That way I can see everything you are talking about. Again, I don't see how this implementation couldn't fit your needs. > > In our case all postings will come from trusted inputers and therefore > would not require to be approved being safeguarded by origin of poster. Keep in mind this system has help built in which, regarldess of how easy you try to make it, will assist the less-capable people in figuring out how to do it right. --Tony > > Wayne > > > > Topic: Wouldn't this be better just taken from the address and > > > Sendmail alias. > > > > Could. (i.e. is that really a requirement). No that is not a requirement, but I have found that designing in flexibility and encapsulating things in objects always ends up better in the long run, even though it takes a little more design work at the beginning. The exchangability of template engines could have two plusses. 1) If a particular app you wanted to integrate GL2 with used a different template engine, you could swap out GL2s engine. 2) What if 2 years down the road (or God forbid, just before the intial release of GL2) some new whizbang template engine comes along, we could change it out with little difficulty. One big advantage that I see to making as much as possible oo is that it will be easy to create high level generic classes that plugin developers can extend as needed. With a template factory, we could even make generic templates, customizable through code for such things as Admin pages. > I haven't had a chance to think completely through this yet. All three are perfect avenues for this sort of communication. While I frequent geeklog.net, posts move off the frontpage quickly. Had it been emailed to the lists I would have caught this. Is there any database changes? I already struggled through this to get this far and I have a half-started conversion script. I just as well assume stay on this outdated version until I get the conversion done. Please tell me there are no DB changes ;-) Oh, while you are adding that mod, can you allow it so links to downloads can be provided instead of the actual file? Looking forward to your update to that... --Tony Blaine Lang wrote: > You have an old version buddy ... I have to admit that I, too, lost track of the various updates that followed the 2.0 release. So this means that 200 people downloaded an outdated version of the plugin from geeklog.net :-/ I have now replaced the file there, but methinks we need to establish a better communication and QA process for future releases ... bye, Dirk -- http://www.haun-online.de/ http://geeklog.info/ From tony at tonybibbs.com Sat Feb 22 13:49:40 2003 From: tony at tonybibbs.com (Tony Bibbs) Date: Sat, 22 Feb 2003 12:49:40 -0600 Subject: [geeklog-modules] Forum installation breaks easily when not using gl_ DB prefix In-Reply-To: <002601c2da97$a349e100$9a0a10ac@xpbl1> References: <3E578794.40304@tonybibbs.com> <20030222144731.1445@smtp.haun-online.de> <002701c2da8e$72e7a4b0$9a0a10ac@xpbl1> <3E57A7E6.6050507@tonybibbs.com> <3E57A9FB.5080700@tonybibbs.com> <001601c2da92$db2683d0$9a0a10ac@xpbl1> <3E57B178.6060208@tonybibbs.com> <002601c2da97$a349e100$9a0a10ac@xpbl1> Message-ID: <3E57C644.1010104@tonybibbs.com> Fine, I'll go ahead and do the appropriate upgrade but someone, for the love of God, please post the updated code as an article on geeklog.net. I'm a bit frustrated because migrating BB systems is tedious shit, I finally get around to doing it with what I thought was the latest version just to find out it isn't. Now I know I'm one of a few doing a migration but I'm sure there are alot of current forum users using what they *think* is the latest 2.0 version. Which begs another point, please update the version number on the modules no matter how small a change may seem. By looking at my version number and the one on the sf.net download site I'd just assume I already had the latest (which isn't true). And to come full circle, glplugs has the same outdated stuff that gl.net has. Which begs the question, can't we centralize all GL related stuff to the gl.net site? I'd like to see us move all themes, plugins, etc to gl.net. Users shouldn't have to go to 8 different places to find stuff. I am mentioning this because if we are going to install the forum modules on gl.net and have knuckles do a redesign that is more marketable then we should look at pull all these other things together. I don't want to step on toes but I'd rather centralize it to gl.net and set up a few more GL admins on that site then to have a bunch of disparate sites loosely affiliated with each other. Sorry if I sound grumpy...don't take any of this personal. --Tony Blaine Lang wrote: > Very well - your on your one. Within the first few days there was a furry of activity in this thread and I was replying to all questions. I noted the issue I had in the archive and that that everyone should download from geeklogplugins. The archive had been distributed to about 5 download sites within the first day and I was not going to be updating or tracking all of them. I was posting updates in this article on geeklog.net for those site admin's to monitor and keeping my site and geeklogplugins updated.
