 Co-Chairs of the Latino Jewish Congressional Caucus Statement on the NO HATE ACT

 H.R.3545, the National Opposition to Hate, Assaults, and Threats to Equality (NO HATE) Act Aims to Improve Hate Crime Reporting and Community Engagement

 WASHINGTON, DC – Today, co-chairs of the Jewish Latino Congressional Caucus, Reps. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23), Will Hurd (TX-23), Eliot Engel (NY-16), and Mario Diaz Balart (FL-25) released the following statement in support of the No Hate Act: 

 Key excerpts from the joint statement: 

 “Hate crimes do not just affect victims. Because the victim is targeted solely because of his or her race, religion, gender, or ethnicity, when an attack occurs, entire communities are put on notice. The most recent FBI report on hate crimes shows an 11.7% rise last year in the number of violent hate crimes. The number of victims in anti-Latino or Hispanic hate crimes rose over 21% in 2018. Jews were the target of a stunning 57.8 percent of all religious bias crimes in 2018, despite making up less than 2 percent of the U.S. population,” said the members.

 “The coronavirus pandemic has brought out both the best and worst of our society. First responders, healthcare professionals, and so many frontline essential workers have indeed shown bravery in the face of fear. They have saved lives and ensured that we all have access to food, pharmaceuticals, and other necessities. Human solidarity has been on display as we face this unprecedented challenge together. However, as uncertainty rises, we have seen hatred unleashed. Conspiracy theories about the role of Jews in creating or spreading the virus swarm. Misinformation abounds. 

 “For this reason, we affirm our support for H.R.3545, the National Opposition to Hate, Assaults, and Threats to Equality (NO HATE) Act. The bipartisan bill will improve hate crime reporting through law enforcement training, allow for the creation of reporting hotlines, call for the increase in resources to liaise with affected communities, and promote public educational forums on hate crimes,” the members concluded.

 WASHINGTON, DC –Hoy, los copresidentes del Caucus Latino-Judío del Congreso, los congresistas Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23), Will Hurd (TX-23), Eliot Engel (NY-16) y Mario Díaz Balart (FL-25) emitieron la siguiente declaración en apoyo de la No Hate Act (Ley de No Odio):

 “Los delitos de odio no solo afectan a las víctimas. Debido a que la víctima es atacada únicamente por su raza, religión, género o etnia, cuando ocurre un ataque, comunidades enteras son notificadas. El informe más reciente del FBI sobre delitos de odio muestra un aumento del 11.7% el año pasado en el número de delitos de odio violentos. El número de víctimas de delitos de odio contra latinos o hispanos aumentó más del 21% en 2018. Los judíos fueron el blanco de ataques de un asombroso 57.8% de todos los delitos de prejuicio religioso en 2018, a pesar de que representan menos del 2 por ciento de la población de Estados Unidos”, dijeron los miembros del Congreso.

 “La pandemia de coronavirus ha sacado a relucir lo mejor y lo peor de nuestra sociedad. Los socorristas, los profesionales de la salud y tantos trabajadores esenciales de primera línea de asistencia han demostrado valentía frente al miedo. Han salvado vidas y se han asegurado de que todos tengamos acceso a alimentos, productos farmacéuticos y otras necesidades. La solidaridad humana se ha manifestado al afrontar juntos este desafío sin precedentes. Sin embargo, a medida que aumenta la incertidumbre, hemos visto desencadenarse el odio. Las teorías de conspiración sobre el papel de los judíos en la creación o propagación del virus abundan. Prolifera la desinformación.

 “Por esta razón, afirmamos nuestro apoyo a la H.R.3545, la Ley de Oposición Nacional al Odio, Agresiones y Amenazas a la Igualdad (NO HATE). El proyecto de ley bipartidista mejorará los sistemas de denuncia de crímenes de odio a través de la capacitación policial, permitirá la creación de líneas directas de denuncia, pedirá el aumento de recursos para comunicarse con las comunidades afectadas y promoverá foros educativos públicos sobre delitos de odio”, concluyeron los miembros.
