Patrick --

I want to welcome all of our city’s students back to class! As a parent
and former public school teacher, I always love the feeling of excitement
and potential the new school year brings to families across the city. But
the beginning of the school year can also be stressful for parents and
students alike. Luckily there are many resources available that can help
your family navigate the school year. For information on transportation,
dual-language programs, enrollment, food programs, and other services visit
the DOE’s helpful back-to-school website.

I also recommend downloading the NYC Schools Account

app. This new feature will allow you to track your child’s education and
see their grades, attendance, PE & class schedule, and more.

Finally, it is vital that you make sure your children are properly
vaccinated for the school year. This year, a new state law requires ALL
children ages 2-months to 18-years-old who are in childcare, public school,
or private school, and who don’t have a medical exemption, to be vaccinated
against certain diseases. Visit this website for more information.

*Celebrating the new school year with our community* Last week, over 1,000
city students and their families joined me for my 6th Annual Back-to-School
Block Party. These great students were able to access education services,
participate in science projects, eat some healthy food and receive a free
backpack full of school supplies. Oh, and we may have done a little dancing
too! I was so proud of our community for coming together to support our
young people and set them up for success in another big school year. We are
looking forward to year #7 in 2020! *Back to school shouldn’t be back to
JUUL*

When students from all over New York City returned to school this week,
their backpacks were full of notebooks, rulers and markers. Unfortunately,
tens of thousands of those kids carried something else in their backpacks:
an e-cigarette.

E-cigarette use, or vaping, has reached epidemic levels among young people
in New York, growing from just 7% in 2014 to 27% in 2018

How did this happen? For years e-cigarette companies have been marketing
products in an array of enticing flavors like chocolate mint and watermelon
twist. These candy-like flavors are clearly designed to appeal to young
people.

That‘s why I have been fighting back against the big tobacco companies
<https://www.languagesforall.nyc/r?u=JwN6iwMxlIqLgHrS5NVO2u5y4ROYyxUbs_REgh-h6mvIdj0nu3QPpuESAeeyRhduRw6bH18v0TUhlDtP19dghcKZR_PII-Lxl0kgamXHETskHLtjgnxa5RnhhdE6poR55lZa1-M6etghBtroFv8jvUfc5POl-azp-Esz3z6WcgI&e=941eb74850764e21f9cc443c46e564bf&utm_source=marklevine&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=19_09_06_eblast_back_to_school&n=7>
by pushing a bill in the City Council that would ban the sale of flavored
e-cigarette products in New York City.

There is no single step we could take that would do more to protect young
people from the dangers of this addiction. Getting all the candy and
sweet-flavored e-cigarettes off the shelves, and out of kids’ backpacks,
would remove the biggest lure that is trapping a new generation in nicotine
addiction. We have an obligation to act decisively and to act now.
