*LEGISLATIVE UPDATE*
The dust is finally settling from our busy six months in Albany. I want to
share some news about legislation we passed in the final weeks of session:

I wrote last month with an update on the *rent laws* (S6458); you can read
the latest in the newsletter that’s headed to homes in SD 31 soon and
available now on our website
<http://email.sts.nysenate.gov/wf/click?upn=uZ3z9X7byQ6LFVGBUQ6PhgtSh4ffDNBE34ciBbQuPhbG-2B6T-2BbobOv13MEFDy2JE69VsGzpSHGe6qvo1sXE8YNlS2vE2fesi1HmjcO20P2tRQgCY55sP-2FIlrafTnaDQwT_A5dOo0UTsiKfTTYHCdNZyhiELG5KOnoWlfiZhOszR2-2FykoowqEK8VrL5AJyBbCCR-2F7UC4Okg5HZaCv5pVIGQc-2FYjoOMrWK52f3xrntC7byMB8pZhtmwbjwlSTc4xQN8mnQwW1mkJuKC5va9wf-2BUA03DYw4lT9OW6cqjpTLM5VFqqw7zrX-2Bfi0R5ZJZdawwcqzq-2B5pWQp4CJ3XPVPXDBrUx8E5py-2FHMOxeKf4Y-2FYc3aeZStkHhBRfH0GNx-2BtTjIock2WTORvQdfyiYGGhT-2BBPUccz1a9z04gS8iCOD1TjdjmvLzLPfdawPvzD8OV2r07AMgfVfKgPIpl-2B29X-2BeWjshe9-2FD7K1e3z9OSWvx-2BM8GO9fAcbP-2FIuq4Bu-2B6JHaFM0igub-2FCz8ej9U2TYW3bwCkncU1nm7svSE315WuzpRfk3ZDScYRnCkjeqlBJjT0crSLXdZog9ZBKitXEdw-2Bd3zXlH5IO0euX2cyR6l6NBgTN3XMduoBrfFxbn71QLt09HfQ>.
If you’re a tenant, please let my office know if you feel these new laws
are being broken. (Also, if you want to become a leader in your building
and form a tenant association, reach out to our office! We’ll get you
connected with resources.)

A *Farmworkers Bill of Rights* (S6758), passed by the Senate and the
Assembly, ensures these vital workers a day of rest, overtime pay, workers
compensation, decent housing, and the ability to form a union. I was proud
to be co-prime sponsor of the original version of this bill and am so glad
it passed!

The *Green Light Bill* (S1747B) is now law: it enables undocumented
immigrants to obtain drivers licenses, extending the human right of
mobility and lowering insurance premiums for all who drive in NY State.

The Senate and Assembly passed my *Employee Protection Provisions*
*bill *(S6208)
requiring EPPs in all contracts with NYC school bus workers. These
hard-working individuals are often the first people outside the home to
greet our kids and are the ones who make sure they make it back home safely
at the end of the school day. I’m proud to stand up for them!

*Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs)* see renewed and
strengthened support, including more funding to mentorship of new
business-owners and penalties for misrepresentation of MWBE status (S6575).

*Climate Justice* saw a partial victory (S6599), after fierce advocacy, to
lower emissions by 85% by 2050. We need to get to 100% reduction,
measurable investments for disadvantaged communities, and stronger labor
standards and job training programs for a just transition to the green
economy.

We have strengthened *laws against sexual harassment* (S6577) by removing
the "severe or pervasive" standard, extending the statute of limitations to
3 years, prohibiting non-disclosure agreements from barring someone
speaking out against discrimination, and more.

We *eliminated gay and trans panic defenses* (S6573), preventing defendents
from claiming they were so shocked to discover a murder victim’s gender
identity or sexual orientation that they killed the person. A fellow
human’s identity never justifies violence.

We also *decriminalized marijuana possession* and expunged records for
those with only marijuana-related charges (S6579A).

As always, reach out to my office with any questions! We hope to see you
sometime this summer for one of our exciting events.

In Unity,
RJ

p.s. We’re trying something new with our office hours, so please take note!
Our last intake on Wednesdays will be 6:30pm, and on Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, and Friday, we’ll be available for intake until 4:30pm.

*NOTICIAS LEGISLATIVAS*

El mes pasado les conté unas noticias sobre *las leyes de renta* (S6458);

inquilinos, contacte a nuestra oficina! Te conectaremos con los recursos
necesarios.)

Me enorgullece defenderlos!

RJ
