Patrick --

For years, Amsterdam Avenue has been one of Manhattan’s busiest streets,
posing a significant danger to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.

Since 2012, the 2.25-mile stretch of Amsterdam Avenue from West 110th to
West 155th Street has seen four pedestrian fatalities and over 800
injuries, a direct consequence of the lack of modern safety infrastructure
needed to protect Manhattanites from dangerous high-speed traffic. But that
ends now.

I'm proud to announce that after months of community-lead advocacy, the
City Department of Transportation (DOT) will be moving forward with a plan
to make much-needed safety improvements and add bike lanes to this
dangerous stretch of Amsterdam Avenue

.

The new redesign features pedestrian islands, shorter crosswalks, bus
lanes, bike lanes, and traffic calming measures that will make Amsterdam
significantly safer. Moreover, the redesign will substantially ease harmful
congestion and pollution in our neighborhoods by improving the flow of
traffic along Amsterdam.

*I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this possible, Manhattan Borough
President Gale Brewer, State Senator Robert Jackson, and of course, the
hundreds of community members who called and emailed our office and DOT to
make their voices heard. *

As the City begins this work in the coming months, my office will monitor
the redesign implementation to make sure it’s being done properly and as
quickly as possible. If you have any questions, please call our office at
(212) 928-6814 or email us at district7 at council.nyc.gov.

Sincerely,
Mark Levine
