We are not going to deport law abiding New Yorkers. We are not going to
tear families apart. [image: Bill de Blasio for Mayor]

Friend -

I wanted to take a moment to talk to you a little bit about Donald Trump’s
executive order on immigration, tell you what it means for New York City,
and then ask you to make your voice heard on this issue.

Yesterday afternoon, President Trump signed an executive order threatening
to withhold federal funding from cities that protect law-abiding immigrants
from deportation.

Now, let me be frank with you from the start: this executive order runs
contrary to the values of our city, and the values of the United States. *We
are not going to deport law-abiding New Yorkers. We are not going to tear
families apart. We are not going to leave children without their parents.*

Now I need to know if you agree:

*Add your name to my petition today as a way of saying that you agree with
New York City’s decision to protect immigrant families, and that you are
committed to the fight to defend our neighbors in immigrant communities
across our city.*

It’s not just that this is the right and humane thing to do, but turning
our police into a deportation force will make us all less safe.

In New York City today, we are building greater trust and respect between
police and the communities they serve. That approach drives down crime and
makes us safer. We need immigrants to feel protected, and to be part of
protecting our neighborhoods. We need them to know that in this city, they
can cooperate with the police and won’t get taken away from their families.

Public safety is our priority and New York City already targets terrorists
and dangerous criminals. The NYPD currently cooperates with federal law
enforcement partners on arresting violators of 170 different serious
crimes. But what we don’t do is break up families for traffic violations,
marijuana possession, or petty offenses.

When I first met Donald Trump at Trump Tower shortly after he was elected
president, I gave him the perspective of the New York City Police
Department that any initiative that causes a rift between police and
communities is counterproductive, and that this city will do all we can to
protect our residents.

But yesterday’s executive action means we all must make our voices heard.
Add yours today:

*Add your name to my petition today as a way of saying that you agree with
New York City’s decision to protect immigrant families, and that you are

Immigrants are part of our communities, not second-class citizens. They are
our neighbors. They own nearly half of the small-businesses in our city and
create jobs and opportunity for many people. We are going to protect and
respect them in New York City.

In solidarity,

Bill de Blasio
Mayor, New York City
