Today, Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United
States -- an inauguration I considered morally illegitimate and therefore
refused to participate in. Trump's continued conduct, refusing to fully
disclose or divest from his many conflicts of interest and ethical
violations, as well as his hateful and racist rhetoric make him unfit for
the Office of the President. I have been appalled at the ad hominem attacks
launched at American heroes like my friend Congressman John Lewis, as well
as the press, whose freedom and independence are guaranteed by our
Constitution. I will not treat Trump's presidency as business as usual, and
we all must be vigilant in protecting our democracy from continued attacks
in the years to come.



Make no mistake: my opposition to Donald Trump will make me a target of his
and the Republicans in Congress. They will attack me and try to discredit
me -- but no matter what I will not back down from this fight.
