FYI - I thought this might be of interest to Broadway Democrats, even
though, of course, everyone's energy at present is aimed at saving the
country (and world) from the Orange Godzilla.

Dear friends old and new,

I’m excited to share some important news. As many of you know, I had the
honor to propose and initiate Jazz at Lincoln Center. I am now dedicated to
bringing music into other kinds of institutions where it’s sorely needed:
faciliities for incarcerated youth. I truly believe music, and for me jazz
especially, bridges all gaps to connect us as human beings. After two
pilots at Rikers Island this summer, I’m happy to share with you that Music
on the Inside, Inc. (MOTI) www.musicontheinside.org is launching next week
as one of the regular arts programs for young people at Rikers.

Donate $50 to our ioby crowd-funding campaign to bring MOTI to Rikers
Island. https://www.ioby.org/project/music-young-men-rikers-island. Thanks
to the generous support of friends like you, MOTI’s budget will cover this
first 6-week songwriting workshop from hip hop to jazz in one facility for
young men ages 18-21. We have been invited to bring MOTI music and
mentorship program to all four of the facilites for youth at Rikers and we
need to increase our budget in order to meet the need. We’re launching this
crowd-funding campaign to raise $6,000 to support an additional MOTI
program at Rosie’s, the facility for women at Rikers.

If you believe as I do that music and mentorships with accomplished
musicians can inspire new directions and hope for this forgotten
population, please click here to donate now.

The most successful campaigns raise 25% of funds in the first days by
getting friends, family and like-minded colleagues to commit to donating up
front. Before opening this up to the broader public, we’re asking you to
fill this special role by donating $50, $100, or whatever you can as soon
as possible.https://www.ioby.org/project/music-young-men-rikers-island. You
donation will help us create a big buzz around the launch so we can reach
our goal to bring harmony and hope to more young lives.

Top Musicians are ‘Playing it Forward.’ MOTI’s Artistic Advisor, Wynton
Marsalis, and members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center orchestra as well as
Jon Faddis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Randy Weston, Wycliffe Gordon and many
other leading musicians share our concerns and want to help support these
young people through the music they love.

The US incarcerates more young men and women than any other country in the
world with high financial and social costs to all of us. The adolescent
brain is still developing and music is one of the most powerful
neurobiological tools we have to change our mood, mindset, and behavior.
The aim of Music on the Inside, Inc. (MOTI) is to reduce recidivism and
financial and social costs by offering these young people music education,
creative development and mentorships with seasoned musicians. Families,
communities, and all of us benefit, when we are able to transform even one
life.

MOTI was inspired by Louis Armstrong who had the opportunity to play in a
band when he was incarcerated as a young man, which made a tremendously
positive difference in his life. Our aim is to bring incarcerated young
people today what Armstrong had: music, mentorship, a band to play and
learn with, and hope!

Thank you for your friendship.

With blessings and love,

Alina

PS: Our campaign deadline is on my birthday. Any and all contributions to
MOTI will begin my new Solar year on a very happy note.♬
