*Lost Inwood: Painter Ernest Lawson* Between the 1890s and the 1930s,
American impressionist Ernest Lawson painted dozens if not hundreds of
landscapes in Washington Heights and Inwood. His *plein air* work captured
vestiges of Northern Manhattan’s waning rural character and offered
glimpses of the urban framework which would soon envelop it. Known for his
vibrant sense of color and rich layering of paint, the canvases remain
vital and expressive reminders of how things once were in the Heights. They
provide colorful, painterly views of our neighborhood at the beginning of
the 20th century. His work has been collected by most major art museums in
the nation. In conjunction with the 2015 Uptown ArtStroll and as part of
the monthly “Lost Inwood” local history series, we’ll examine the life,
work and continuing legacy of Ernest Lawson. We’ll view a fantastic,
rarely-seen collection of beautifully detailed color slides of Lawson’s
locally-done paintings, revel in his palette of “crushed jewels” and
discover the exact locations of several of his favorite vantage points. At
the Indian Road Café, Indian Road @ W. 218th St. *Tuesday, June 2nd at

*Town Hall Meetings on Rent Regulation *Join Senator Espaillat and other
elected officials and advocates as we discuss how to strengthen rent laws.
Already 35,000 regulated units have been lost under current rent laws since
their passage in 2011. More than 200,000 have been lost since the early
1990's. New York is in the midst of a housing crisis, we cannot hope to
climb out of if we continue losing affordable housing. It is imperative we
expand rent regulations to stop sharp rent increases that are forcing
working New Yorkers out of their homes. With less than one month remaining
until the expiration of rent laws, I will be hosting two town hall meetings
so residents are informed about how these laws affect them, and to talk
about specific proposals for how the rent laws can be improved. At Fort
George Presbyterian Church (1525 St. Nicholas Ave. at W. 186th St.) on

*Sing for Hope Pianos 2015 *The Sing for Hope Pianos is a beloved public
art installation that brings brightly colored pianos to the parks and
public spaces of NYC’s five boroughs for anyone and everyone to play. For
two weeks in the summer, the pianos — each a unique art piece created by a
different artist or designer — serve as gathering places in their
communities, hosting impromptu concerts by professionals and amateurs alike
in an open festival of music for all of New York City. After the two-week
public exhibition, we donate the instruments to the NYC organizations we
serve year round, allowing the pianos to enrich lives for years to come.
While their time on the streets is a joyful event for our city, the Sing
for Hope Pianos’ true impact lies in their service as ongoing cornerstones
of arts access for communities and individuals in need. As NYC’s largest
public art project, the Sing for Hope Pianos impacts an estimated 2 million
New Yorkers and visitors each year. This year's Sing for Hope Pianos
exhibit will feature 50 painted Pianos, including four in northern
Manhattan: at the Highbridge Rec. Center, in Inwood Hill Park, Riverside
Park Rotunda at W. 151st St., and Montefiore Park on Broadway & W. 135th St.*

*Know Your Construction Professional **Directory *Safe construction begins
by ensuring homeowners, property managers and development companies hire
qualified and experienced professionals. Knowing a professional’s
disciplinary and voluntary license surrender record can help determine if
they can safely perform construction work. The Department of Buildings
(DoB) investigates and takes disciplinary action against construction
professionals when their conduct violates standards set forth in the NYC
Construction Codes. DoB has created a searchable comprehensive directory of
all construction professionals that it monitors. The catalogue provides
records back to 1998, and includes details of discipline action that were
enforced. The Directory, which is available online (
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/html/safety/iad.shtml), provides disciplinary
and voluntary surrender records for: licensed Architects and Engineers,
Construction Superintendents, Contractors, Electricians, Plumbers, Sign
Hangers, and many other professionals commonly hired by businesses,
homeowners and apartment dwellers, as well as individuals that performed
work without proper licensing. Anyone hiring a construction professional is
encouraged to check both their disciplinary and voluntary surrender
records, as well as current license status. Property owners are responsible
for any work performed on their buildings and should ensure they hire
qualified and experienced professionals who will comply with all
requirements of the NYC Building Code and Zoning Resolution.
