*Homebound in NYC: A Documentary *A film that portrays American Latinos in
a positive way, that tells a Universal story anyone can relate to. In the
words of the producer: “As a mom I want my kids to grow up and see people
that look like them on the big screen not just playing the thugs and
illegals, but playing lawyers, doctors, teachers, etc. Media has an impact
in the way the rest of the country perceives us and in the way our children
perceive themselves. A study just came out last week stating how bad the
situation is for Latinos in the media:
http://mic.com/articles/95714/one-absurd-statistic-shows-just-how-bad-hollywood-s-latino-problem-is?utm_source=policymicFB&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=social.
Another article came out on the NY Daily news last week that talks about
the same thing:
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/movies/hispanics-net-roles-major-hollywood-movies-study-article-1.1891014.
If you take a moment to read the comments under the articles most people
believe all Latinos are new immigrants and that we should just go to Mexico
to work. Latinos are 17% of the population. We are not all new immigrants,
some have been in this country for MANY generations.” To get tickets, go to

*Second Annual Michael Perelstein Memorial Scholarship Fund: *a $20,000
Scholarship fund created to support New York City school children (grades

****HOW YOU CAN HELP*** (4 items)*

*District 6 Community Education Council seeks art supplies *In an effort to
make CEC meetings more accessible to District 6 parents, the Parent
Involvement & Outreach Committee will be establishing childcare at each
meeting. They are looking for donations of arts and crafts and other such
supplies (crayons, markers, paper, stickers, small toys/puzzles, etc.) to
help keep children occupied during meetings that are interesting and
important for adults, but not so much fun for kids. Also they are looking
for donations of food/snack, if you are a business owner, or a generous
person with a Costco card. For more information or if you are able to make
a donation, please call Marilu Pisani at 917-521-3793 or email
cec6 at schools.nyc.gov.

*NYS Council on the Arts Survey *The New York State Council on the Arts
(NYSCA), a New York State government agency, needs your help. As the agency
develops its long-term plan to advance the role of the arts, culture and
heritage in the lives of the state's citizens, visitors and communities, it
is crucial that we hear directly from the public. In this brief survey we'd
like to learn about your experiences with arts, culture and heritage, as
well as the role you feel they should play in your community and the state.
Your feedback will help NYSCA's plan align with the values and priorities
of the state's citizens. We hope you'll take 10 minutes to fill out this
anonymous survey. Please feel free to share the survey link with friends
and family. Thank you! Link the survey here: http://tinyurl.com/NYSCASurvey1

*Ansche Chesed’s Shelter Needs You! *Now that summer is here, our shelter

Excellence in Aging and Diversity**.* A primary goal is to enhance the
health and well-being of underserved older adults, families, and caregivers
through collaboration in education, research and advocacy activities with
community members who work with our elders. To help us develop and support
education and training programs that will be most useful to you and your
teams, please click here (https://jfe.qualtrics.com/form/SV_b1abU6axLpPWVo1)

****ROAD & TRANSIT INFO*** (6 items)*

*Temporary Relocation of Bx3 Stop During GWB Bus Station Construction: *The
TutorPerini Corp. requested and received a Bx3 bus stop adjustment from NYC
DOT for the duration of construction (June 2, 2014 to January 1, 2015) at
the Port Authority GWB Bus Terminal. The northbound Bx3 stop on Broadway
between W. 178th and W. 179th Streets will be eliminated and installed on
Broadway between W. 179th & W. 180th Streets.

*Rerouting of M2 & M3 (southbound) at W. 168th St. & Broadway *Because of
sidewalk and subway ceiling reconstruction (which is part of the Brick Arch
Reconstruction Project) the M2/M3 southbound bus stop will be temporarily
revoked. Due to redesign issues, the bus stop adjustment at 168th Street
and Broadway did not take place in February as previously planned. Those
design issues have now been resolved and the contractor is requesting that
NYC DOT eliminate the M2/M3 southbound bus stop on Broadway at W.
168th St. *beginning
August 3rd for a duration of 2-3 months.*

*M100 Reroutes to Serve Dyckman Street *The M100 bus will now serve
residents, shoppers and community members along the Dyckman corridor and
Tenth Avenue, bringing public transit to once under-served areas. Traveling
northbound, the bus will turn right from Broadway onto Dyckman St. making
stops all along the corridor. It will then pass the Dyckman Houses and turn
left onto Tenth Avenue, where PS 5 is located. The bus will then drive up
Tenth Avenue providing bus service where it did not previously exist. The
Bx7 will continue to operate north and south on Broadway in the areas that
the M100 once operated so there will be no loss of service on Broadway.
Thanks to Council Member Rodriguez's office (in particular Marble Hill &
Dyckman Houses Community Liaison, Tony Edwards) for their efforts to bring
about this change in service better to serve our community.

*M100 Bus Top Change *As of Tuesday, July 29, MTA New York City Transit has
officially requested permission from NYC DOT to eliminate the northbound
M100 bus stop on 10th Avenue on the near side of W. 207th Street due to
customer and operating safety. The stop has been replaced with a new bus
stop on 10th Avenue at the far side of W. 207th Street (2nd column after
the intersection). Our Operations Planning unit observed that the initial
bus stop caused customers to be dropped off into a right turn lane and cars
were passing the bus on the right as customers were alighting. By moving
the stop from the near side to the far side, the bus avoids dropping off
customers into the right turn lane.

*Changes to Weekend “1” Train Service *1-Train service operates between
South Ferry and 96 St. There will no 1-Trains between 96th & 242nd Streets, A
/ C trains, M3 and free shuttle buses will provide alternate service. For
service between 96th & 168th Streets, use free shuttle buses or the A/C at
nearby stations. *For service between 168th & 191st Streets,* use the M3 or
free shuttle buses. Or, use the A at nearby stations. *For Dyckman & 207th
Streets,* use nearby A stations; transfer between 1 & A trains at 59th St. *For
service between 207th St. & 242nd St.,* in the Bronx, take free shuttle
buses. Transfer between buses and A trains at 207th St and between A & 1 trains
at 59th St. *11:30pm **Friday, August 15th through 5am Monday, August 18th.
*

*Slow Down on Broadway! *Effective Monday, August 4th, the NYPD will
enforce a 25mph speed limit on Broadway from West 59th to West 220th
Streets as part of an “Arterial Slow Zone.” Police officers will now ticket
drivers found speeding over 25mph (rather than 30mph limit as on most NYC
streets) in this area. Since 2008, 22 people have been killed by cars in
this stretch, a statistic we would like to limit to 0 for the future.
Please help us save lives by driving at lower speeds and remaining
conscious of all others who use our streets including cyclists and
pedestrians. With your help, we can achieve Vision Zero.

****LG/USA PALISADES UPDATE*** *

The Englewood Cliffs Town Council met last night (Wednesday, August 13th)
and voted unanimously to restore the town's zoning to 35 feet. This
followed a public hearing attended by many members of the Concerned
Residents of Englewood Cliffs. A representative of LG and the union leader
in Bergen County spoke against the ordinance change, but they were
outnumbered and out argued tonight. LG still has its variances and the
right to build to 143 feet, unless a court rules otherwise or it
voluntarily decides to lower its tower. But today's action undercuts the
company's legal arguments and is a real victory: the change removes one of
LG’s key arguments in court, which is that their variances conform to the
town's zoning. It also protects the Palisades from other high-rise
developments in Englewood Cliffs as-of-right, though the Mayor did invite
other companies to come to Englewood Cliffs to seek zoning variances. For
coverage on recent events, go to:
http://www.nj.com/bergen/index.ssf/2014/08/englewood_cliffs_lowers_building_height_limits_residents_eye_lg.html

Also, the Palisades Meetup-Cleanup meets on the first Sunday of every month
at Ross Dock, where they assemble to clean up the trash on the trails and
picnic grounds. This is a joint effort between the Palisades Insterstate
Park and the Appalachian Mountain Club. For more information, visit
www.njpalisades.org. *Sunday, September 7th, 10am – 1pm. *

In addition:

· Help spread the word about LG's development and its threat to the
historical and landmarked Palisades.

· Consider carefully the character of the company from which they
chose to buy their cell phones, TVs, washing machines, etc. This is *not* a
"boycott."

· Joining the Protect the Palisades Meetup group will let you know
about events and make it easy to register for them, and will help us gather
new supporters. It is especially important for those who are coordinating
events to join our Meetup Group:http://www.meetup.com/Protect-the-Palisades/.
