*Denim Day NYC Rally and Press Conference to raise awareness about sexual
violence Bring your friends and wear your jeans! “*Denim Day” grew out of a
1998 Italian Supreme Court decision that overturned a rape conviction
because the victim wore tight jeans. The judges reasoned the victim’s tight
jeans meant that she had to have helped her assailant remove them, implying
consent. People all over the world were outraged, and wearing jeans became
an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive
attitudes and myths surrounding sexual assault. In 15 years, the observance
in the US has grown to more than 2 million participants. *Sexual violence
is a public health and safety issue that affects all of us: *in this
country, 1 in 5 women have been raped; nearly half of women and 1-in-5 men
have experienced other forms of sexual violence, including sexual coercion
and unwanted sexual contact. Young people are at the highest risk: it is
estimated that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys have had an unwanted or abusive

****HOW YOU CAN HELP*** (5 items)*

*Help the United Palace Replace its Silver Screen *Since returning film to
the Palace last year with screenings of "Dracula," "Casablanca," "It's a
Wonderful Life," and several NYC classics we have learned how much this
town loves going to movies in a magnificent setting. The greatest
compliment we hear from audience members is that watching a movie at the
Palace with a large crowd has the same electricity as seeing live theatre
on Broadway. It has encouraged us to take the next step in the ongoing
process of improving the theatre so that it lives up to what amNY newspaper
called *"The Best Way To See Movies The Way They Used To Be." *The first
thing we need to do is replace the over 50-year-old screen. The decades-old
layers of dust, holes and scratches severely detract from the audience's
enjoyment of the movies. After cleaning it last year we realized that it is
beyond repair. We need your help to raise $20,000 to install a new screen
before April 27th when we show the original *"King Kong." *Among the great
perks you can receive for your contribution are: free tickets; a movie pass
through the end of 2015; reserved seats; private screenings. To contribute
or learn more about the campaign please visit:
http://igg.me/at/upca-screen/x/1974676. We have been surprised by how
popular our screenings have become and want to continue to give our
audiences the finest cinematic experiences that we can. Thank you for
helping out by contributing or spreading the word about the campaign. Hope
to see you back at the Palace soon.

*Book Drive *LiteracyINC is sponsoring a book drive in the lobby of 5030
Broadway, where they have their offices. (For those who work in the
building, there is also a collection bin in the 6th floor lunchroom.) We
are collecting story and chapter books for children in Pre-K through Third
grade. The books are distributed to children who attend our programs in all
five boroughs. The books will be distributed during our month-long Reading
Everywhere Celebration, where we host read alouds and have literacy-based
activities for children. Our Reading Everywhere Month celebration kicks-off
in Inwood the first week in May and ends in Queens during the last week of
May. For more information, contact Barhynn Johnson: 212-620-5462 ext.110 /
bjohnson at lincnyc.org. *Ends today!*

they are already just over halfway to their goal of $6,500. Visit
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/whin-music-project-orchestrating-dreamsto
view their video, learn about WHIN, and help them reach their goal! As
you will see, they not only have very talented musicians but also actors
and public speakers! For more information, email David Gracia:

*“Gift of Love Benefit”* An evening of food, Filipino dance performance and
a silent auction to benefit survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. The organizers are
looking for donations of products or services for the fundraiser, as well
as sponsorships and journal ads. For more information about the event or to
get involved in planning, email Donald Wilen:
donald.wilen1 at verizon.net. *Saturday,
April 26th, 3pm-7pm.*

*Raise a New Screen at the Palace *If you haven't heard yet, our campaign
is so close to the $10k mark that Toshiba USA has offered an incentive: if
our contributors can get us to $9k they will kick in $1,000. As of this
morning, we only need $800 to reach that goal. But time is running out: we
need to have the money by 5pm on Thursday. If you are planning to
contribute but haven't yet, now is a great time. There are terrific perks
for ALL contribution levels. And one lucky donor will win dinner for two at
the New Leaf Restaurant and Bar. To contribute or learn more go to:
http://igg.me/at/upca-screen If you have already given, please share the
Toshiba Challenge with your networks (and LIKE us on Facebook).

*Heat & Hot Water *We are grateful that spring, and warmer weather are upon
us. However, it’s still “heating season,” and City and State Law require
building owners to provide heat and hot water to all tenants. In addition
to being required to provide hot water 365 days per year at a constant
minimum temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, building owners are required
to provide heat through May 31st:

· Between the hours of 6am and 10pm, if the outside temperature
falls below 55 degrees, the inside temperature is required to be at least
68 degrees Fahrenheit; and,

· Between the hours of 10pm and 6am, if the temperature outside
falls below 40 degrees, the inside temperature is required to be at least
55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tenants who are cold in their apartments should first attempt to notify the
building owner, managing agent or superintendent. If heat is not restored,
the call the City's Customer Service Center at 311. (311 can be accessed
outside of New York City by dialing 212-NEW-YORK; the TTY number for the
hearing impaired is 212-504-4115.) The Center is open 24-hours a day,
seven-days a week. You may also file a complaint at
http://www.nyc.gov/apps/311/ for heat and hot water conditions.

****LG/USA PALISADES UPDATE*** (12 items)*

Eleven respected park and preservation organizations joined in filing a
“friend of the court”
brief<http://www.protectthepalisades.org/11_organizations_and_officials_from_nj_and_ny_file_legal_briefs_opposing_lg_s_tower>last
week in New Jersey Appellate Court against LG Electronics’ plans to
erect a 143-foot tower less than 60 yards from Palisades Interstate Park.
Fort Tryon Park is a NYC Landmark and listed on the National Register of
Historic Places in large part for its majestic views of the Hudson River
and Palisades. Now those views are in jeopardy: across the Hudson River
from Fort Tryon Park, the international firm LG Electronics plans to
construct a 143-foot high complex in an area that historically has had a
35-foot height cap. The Trust will continue to advocate for our park goers
and surrounding neighborhoods by urging LG electronics to revise the
project design, lowering the height to just below the tree line on the
Palisades by making more use of their 27-acre campus.

Last week Sen. Espaillat was joined by Governor Cuomo, Senator Gillibrand,
Senator Schumer, and Attorney General Schneiderman joined many
others<http://www.protectthepalisades.org/endorsements>in taking a
stance against the LG tower to be built above the Palisades
tree line. Commissioner Rose Harvey recently wrote in an open letter on the
Governor’s behalf, “At 143 feet in height, the proposed tower would
threaten one of the nation’s most significant natural and historic
resources — the ridge line of the Hudson River Palisades.”

Even compared to similar building projects, such as Samsung's, the LG
building doesn't stack up well against the competition. Find out more in
this New York Times
editorial<http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/10/arts/design/opposition-keeps-mounting-to-lg-project-on-the-hudson.html>which
reports, “The project in San Jose is thoughtful. LG’s is a public
shame.”

*Please note in your calendars some important upcoming dates, and ways you
can get involved. *The Event Committee of Protect the
Palisades.org<http://palisades.org/>encourages members and supporters
to participate in the public events
listed below to spread the word about LG's development and its threat to
the historical and landmarked Palisades.

1) We are asking the public to consider carefully the character of
the company from which they chose to buy their cell phones, TVs, washing
machines, etc. This is *not* a "boycott."

2) Joining the Protect the Palisades Meetup group will let you know
about events and make it easy to register for them, and will help us gather
new supporters. It is especially important for those who are coordinating
events to join our Meetup Group:
http://www.meetup.com/Protect-the-Palisades/. To do this, create a user ID
and password. Your actual email address will remain anonymous and you can
choose a user name that is not your real name if you have any concerns.
(Please note when you sign up you will be prompted to select interests; you
can minimize emails you receive by selecting fewer or no interests.)

changing from the 35 ft. height restriction that has been in place for many
years. The public will be allowed to speak, but we are advised *not to ask
