Good morning everyone!

I hope your day is off to a good start.  Yesterday, as part of the May Day actions
happening throughout Manhattan, I testified at the Rent Guidelines Board calling
 for a rent freeze on stabilized apartments and then marched with tens of thousands
of New Yorkers to demand economic equity and justice for all.

Making our voices heard has never been more critical. As I highlight in a new Huffington

published yesterday, child poverty rates in communities like ours are on the rise
- up to 44% in East Harlem and 54% in Mott Haven.  How has the Mayor responded? 
 By slashing after school and child care budgets, vetoing prevailing and living 
wage measures and making it more difficult for New Yorkers to access basic services.
 There is a true double standard of poverty and accountability in this city. I hope

We shouldn't criminalize low-income New Yorkers and we shouldn't criminalize hard
work.  That's what I told the Bloomberg administration when they attended a hearing
the Council held last week on street vendors in New York City.  Unfortunately, instead
of supporting these hard-working entrepreneurs, the City has too often resorted 
to aggressive enforcement.  Imagine paying a $1,000 fine for having your ID tucked
away in your jacket!  My colleagues and I are working on legislation to lower these
punitive fines aimed at New Yorkers who are only seeking to support their families.

And this afternoon the City Council will hold a hearing focusing on another vulnerable
sector of our workforce: car wash workers.  The car wash industry is notorious for
its violations of wage and hour laws and poor working conditions.  Car wash workers
are currently organizing here in El Barrio/East Harlem, with the help of labor and
community organizations.  On Monday, I introduced legislation that would give the
City greater oversight over the car wash industry, by requiring these businesses
 to be licensed by the Department of Consumer Affairs.
