Happy Women's History Month Friends!

This is one of my favorite times of year. Of course we know that women make vital
contributions to our society each and every day, but during this month women are
encouraged to highlight their present efforts and those of pioneering figures.
I am very proud to be one of 18 women currently serving on the City Council, and
I am proud of the work we in the Council have done to protect women's health.
However, as I made clear in a statement I made on the floor of the City Council
last week [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109470926930&s=119&e=001bp3p4oqRjG_iBE81qBL8_28T2Cl2rk6Y9Mfl58zk0EC8vueH0MmkvCb6cgY3cdj_Zv_Cx6n2Q6QqGBneHhaFGcs3rwjYD8N5J4EKjw6OFHH0wgq0hPBMpL8uNhWZoQ53vZ1xUZzj1Ps=],
the attack on women's rights remains a present danger in our society. The Virginia
legislature, and several others, continue to pursue fetal personhood bills and other
legislation that limit women's abilities to control their own reproductive health.
We must do everything we can to turn back these barbaric and chauvinistic campaigns.
And one way we can do that, this month, is by empowering women with stories of their
own success in the struggle for equal rights and recognition.

On a related but slightly different note, you should also be aware that, this week,
the City Council launched its preliminary budget hearings to look at the Mayor's
budget. At a time when the Mayor has asked us to turn our attention to young Black
and Latino males in this City, he is proposing to cut child care services and after
school programming. I highlighted these kinds of inconsistencies and double standards
at our first budget hearing on Monday. In addition to our young people themselves,
our city's working mothers will surely bear the brunt of cuts to services like these,
which help them to stay employed and support their families.

Alright, now for more positive news. It's hard to believe it, but we are already
less than three weeks away from the vote in participatory budgeting! Click here
for the dates and locations. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109470926930&s=119&e=001bp3p4oqRjG8IOw7EfYmQ6mhYniaCLJThdyLHxPLXXdTrc6_ssmsogW_WTW1IrFgM1q-2LGbXRB6IqOLQdPWU1vp8ee7PSzqGxXqhlO8_up0nCPZe0vFxgQ==]
As you know, this is the first process of its kind in NYC and, when the residents
of our district finally cast their ballots later this month, they will be determining
how to spend over $1 million of my discretionary funds. This is what democracy looks
like!

In this final stretch before the vote, we need to make sure we reach as many people
in our community as possible, and in order to do that, we need your help.

Can you volunteer to spread the word on the participatory budgeting vote? Click
here to let us know how you can help. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109470926930&s=119&e=001bp3p4oqRjG8jtKpCNBUbBtPd757MiDLXSgc6DPvOJezj5dyPTWgmc0XTn6lD6a6EtCuxe77uPCZpgXkmqo02tuwDfAJiMbQMmgBBiqPktSC5j_1s2OHHc9Ps1GDYtPLTO4jL1Sf7HeuHRvdRzLuPnsiw1u3xXr1IL4nxRmYS2plKJK99VfS6IpdGMLFJTmI3h-YiZi_GGBg=]
There are coordinated outreach efforts happening every day next week, so there
are plenty of opportunities to chip in. Any contribution of your time, no matter
how small, will help move this process forward.

Well, I'm going to get ready for tomorrow's budget hearings. Please be in touch
and stay tuned to what we're doing. Follow me on Twitter for regular updates on
the budget and what you can do to ensure that families don't lose vital services.
We too must stop the attack on women and families.

Best,

Melissa
