Good afternoon!
 
I hope your week has gotten off to a great start.  I'm writing to share some long-awaited information regarding our office's discretionary funding process for Fiscal Year 2013.  As some of you know, we as Council Members have the ability to allocate funding to organizations in our district.  While discretionary funds have come under attack in recent years, I stand firmly behind this process as a way of reinvesting public dollars into communities like ours and supporting organizations doing vitally important work to serve our local residents.

Last year, I helped secure nearly $1 million in expense funding (for programmatic expenses) and $12 million in capital funding for our district, whether it was through direct allocations from my office or by advocating for funding from some of my partners in government.
 
As you know, my office's decision making process this year will be a bit different.  $1 million of the funding that I would normally allocate to projects will be decided by the community in the Participatory Budgeting process.  If you haven't yet, please RSVP for one of our upcoming neighborhood assemblies.  Tomorrow, we will hold an assembly in El Barrio/East Harlem and Thursday's assembly will be in the Manhattan Valley/Upper West Side part of my district.  Next Thursday, we will be up in the Bronx.  I hope you can take the time to join us at these important events to learn about which projects will be on the ballot next month.
 
I look forward to seeing all of the submissions in the discretionary budget process this year, and of course, to seeing the results of our participatory budgeting public vote in March.
