A Note from Assembly Member O'Donnell

As winter arrives, the Assembly is preparing to head back to Albany for the start
of the 2013-2014 legislative session. I will be beginning my sixth term, and I'm
looking forward to continuing to advocate for progressive solutions to our state's
problems and fighting for what's best for our community.

I'm pleased to announce that there have been a couple new developments in the push
to prevent the controversial drilling practice known as high-volume hydraulic fracturing
or "hydrofracking" from entering New York. As examples across our country continue
to demonstrate, this drilling method is simply too risky and dangerous to allow
in our state, and further review of the process is absolutely essential.

First, the original health impact study of the practice by the NYS Department of
Environmental Conservation (DEC), considered by many to have been insufficient,
is currently undergoing review by the NYS Department of Health (DOH) and three
outside public health experts. Second, the evaluation period for the DEC regulations
governing hydrofracking has been extended 90 days after the previous deadline of
November 29th and will incorporate findings from the health impact review. This
extended evaluation will include an additional 30-day public comment period. This
period will run from December 12th to January 11th - more information can be found
on DEC's website here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/77353.html [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001uboNCH9h18ihg9jbU1PIJKlpPTpFrDeYJnb_-i1yK2Sv-zJvLro8omP-GX3FcERMRfl5j64w_HkzpfU8jhzr7je__iL2Ul-2SJvHBHiFAjhWmZA1bpaoPwWG2teJlNQ5whVqgwmAZyM=].
I will continue to follow the hydrofracking review process closely, and I remain
committed to preventing this hazardous drilling process from entering our state
and endangering our citizens.

In our community, I was pleased to sponsor my annual Free Flu Shot Clinic on November
16th. A big thank-you to the dozens of individuals who came out and received their
vaccinations, as well as to the RyanCenter for hosting the clinic and donating flu
shots!

As always, should you need assistance or information, my Community Office is open
and ready to help from 9AM - 5:30PM. With the Assembly not currently in session,
I am in my Community Office most days and want to help any way I can. Feel free
to call my office at (212) 866-3970 or email me at odonnelld at assembly.state.ny.us
[mailto:odonnelld at assembly.state.ny.us]. I look forward to seeing many of you out
in the community this month. Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!

EDUCATION UPDATES

To make up for the school days lost due to Hurricane Sandy, school will be in session
Wednesday, February 20th, through Friday, February 22nd, as well as on June 4th,
which was formerly a half day.

The Department of Education has announced 24 high schools in the city are being
considered for closure; however, none are in Education District 3 or Assembly District
69.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, almost all schools in Manhattan have returned
to their regular buildings. The Department of Education is working hard to restore
the remaining schools to their permanent locations.
