I hope your week is going well.  Last time I wrote, I unveiled the results of the
Participatory Budgeting (PB) process, where we decided how to allocate $1.5 million
in funding for our community.  Since then, PBS released two reports profiling our
district's experience with PB.  Each of these videos is definitely a must-see. Check

These videos capture the importance of PB--it's an opportunity for everyone in the
community to take part in local decision-making, including people who have not previously
participated in the political process. Residents have come off the sidelines and
 stepped up to the plate to decide where their money should go through this initiative.
More than a thousand of us participated in PB this year in ways large and small 
and we hope to have hundreds or thousands more participate next year.

On a related note, the Progressive Caucus of the NYC Council, which I co-chair, 
is asking City residents to weigh in on the Mayor's proposed budget [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001jWwn4hpurcmJQ_XYfW4_PPJNNZAZJCGsWShD9aqpYmQzFuO-sfDjBQfrxUoFEJx6kM1u1JeqA_vLjMitAAHngUs3laeq-D4jnE6ltH-sLwQPsKWU7AJ-eOXS8tdH2mL_snTRwnjPw7c=]
by Wednesday, April 25.  While the Mayor presents the budget as good news, many 
of my colleagues and I are deeply concerned about  cuts to critical services for
 NYC families, including cutting childcare and after-school programs by 47,000 children,
decreasing services for people with HIV/AIDS, and reducing funding for transportation,
elder abuse services and caregivers for seniors.
