New Yorkers Against Gun Violence is looking for volunteers to phone bank to
constituents in the districts of Rep. Michael Grimm (Republican from Staten
Island, Bay Ridge) and Rep. Nan Hayworth (Republican from Mid-Hudson) and/or
flyer in Rep. Michael Grimm's district. We are trying to get Congress to
pass HR 308, the bill that would ban high-capacity ammunition magazines like
the one used in Tucson (and Virginia Tech, Columbine, Binghamton, etc.).
The Tucson shooter was only stopped while attempting to reload after firing
off 32 rounds in 16 seconds. If he had been forced to reload after 10
rounds there could have been fewer lives lost and fewer families devastated.
Please pass along this email to friends and members of your organizations to
see if they would be willing to volunteer as well.

We have in-district meetings set up with Rep. Grimm and Rep. Hayworth and we
need to apply as much pressure as possible both before and after the
meetings. These reps need to hear from their constituents and understand
that they are beholden to the district, not the gun lobby. We have nearly
100 co-sponsors for HR 308 so far, but no Republicans. It's critical that we
get some bi-partisan support for this legislation ASAP. I hope you will be
able to join us!

We need your help to pass HR 308. Congresswoman McCarthy, whose own family
was victim to a mass shooting in 1993, has introduced a new bill called HR
308 that would ban high-capacity ammunition magazines with more than 10
rounds of ammunition. HR 308 would put back into place a law that existed
under the Federal Assault Weapons Act. In 2004, President Bush and the
Republican Congress did not renew the ban, despite support from over 70% of
Americans.

It is up to us to give this bill the momentum it needs to go to a vote and
become law. NYAGV has a plan and it involves volunteers reaching out to our
allies in key districts.
