ASSEMBLY MEMBER O’DONNELL VOTES IN FAVOR OF MORATORIUM ON HYDRAULIC
FRACTURING
----------------------------------------------------------------

Governor David Paterson called lawmakers back to Albany on November 29th
for a session of the State Assembly and Senate to address specific
legislative concerns before the year’s end. During the session the
Assembly took up numerous important pieces of legislation that have
far-reaching impacts for both the 69th Assembly District and New York
State as a whole.

One particular piece of legislation Assembly Member O’Donnell was proud
to support during the regular session portion of the November 29th
meeting was Assembly Bill A11443. This legislation would establish a
moratorium on the controversial drilling practice of hydraulic
fracturing, or “hydrofracking,” until May 15th, 2011, in order to allow
time for a more thorough evaluation of the safety and environmental
impact of the drilling method. Assembly Member O’Donnell has serious
concerns about these potential environmental and public health risks,
and has previously spoken out in favor of a moratorium, stating in an
October 1st letter to Governor Paterson, “Until all matters of DEC
funding are resolved and proper oversight of any future drilling is
ensured, a moratorium is essential to the health and well-being of all
New Yorkers and key to the protection of our natural resources.”

The Assembly passed the bill by a vote of 93-43. The Senate passed
their version of the bill in August; it now awaits Governor Paterson’s
signature to become law.
