"In my community domestic violence is a very, very big thing," St. Sen. Bill Perkins said. Perkins also tells us he wants Monserrate gone as soon as possible.

Today Perkins made the following statement regarding the recent conviction of Senator Hiram Monserrate:
 
“With his conviction for assaulting a woman, I call on Hiram Monserrate to do what is right for his constituents, for the State Senate and the entire state.  In this time when New York State faces such serious challenges and must deal with a $3 billion deficit, it is more important than ever that
elected officials focus solely on the needs of the people of this state.

The courts have ruled that Mr. Monserrate is guilty of a violent crime against a woman. Domestic violence is far too prevelant in our society and must not be tolerated or treated lightly. Under the circumstances Mr. Monserrate’s presence in the State Senate distracts all of us from our obligation to doing the people’s business.  We need to earn the public’s
trust. Mr. Monserrate must do the right thing and resign.”
