Women Leaders Speak Out Against the Stupak Amendment

Women elected officials, pro-choice leaders and women's health experts stand up in opposition to the Stupak Amendment. The Stupak Amendment restricts private insurance companies offered through the exchange from covering abortion services, even for women buying insurance with their own money, if the plan covers even one person receiving a subsidy for insurance. In doing so, it is the first restriction on women purchasing insurance with their own dollars. It also restricts the public plan from covering abortion, even if people pay a portion of their premium. Abortion-rights advocates are calling the Stupak amendment a “de facto” abortion ban.
